New episode is out now 🕯️ One of the most controversial events of the Civil War happened in a small Georgia town. On June 11, 1863, Union forces entered Darien and by nightfall most of it was in flames. The troops ordered to take part included the famed 54th Massachusetts. But the story of who was responsible is more complicated than many people realize.

Sometimes the mystery is: why haven’t you heard the story? 🕯️

Have you heard the one about Alabama's "Sheriff Without a Gun"?

Thomas Gilmore is one of those remarkable figures of American history that somehow slipped quietly past the national spotlight. In 1970, he became Greene County, Alabama’s first Black sheriff, and did so with a philosophy that seemed almost unthinkable for the time. He chose to serve without a gun.

While his life intersected with some of the most significant social changes of the 20th century, his name rarely appears alongside the figures most often associated with that era.

The new episode of Southern Mysteries explores Gilmore's life as a pastor, community leader, and law enforcement officer.

It's available now wherever you listen to podcasts.

Kidnappings for ransom involving elderly victims are extraordinarily rare. Yet decades apart, two cases remind us that “rare” does not mean impossible.

In Arizona, 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance has captured national attention, raising questions families and investigators faced in a case covered in the 2nd season of Southern Mysteries. In July 1988, 72-year-old Annie Laurie Hearin vanished from her home in Jackson, Mississippi. She was a grandmother, wife, and deeply respected presence in Jackson’s civic and cultural life. The day she disappeared was normal-coffee with her husband then hosting bridge club. By evening, Annie Laurie was gone. Her purse, shoes, glasses and medication were found in her home.

Then came the note. It was not a typical ransom demand. There was no dollar figure or clear instructions for payment. The strangely worded message referenced a long-running business dispute tied to Annie Laurie’s husband. The letter contained misspellings, grammatical errors, and an odd list of names.

What followed was an intense, multi-state investigation. The FBI examined every element. Agents pursued leads across the country and eventually attention centered on Alfred Winn. The Florida attorney had been locked in years of bitter legal & financial struggles involving the Hearin family’s company. Winn was later convicted of conspiracy to kidnap, but Annie Laurie was never found.

For her family, there was never a resolution. Only the slow, painful realization that she was gone. Annie Laurie was eventually declared legally dead, a necessary legal step that did nothing to ease the emotional weight carried by those who loved her.

As investigators search for answers in the Guthrie case (that may or may not be kidnapping), Annie's story is a powerful reminder. Cases involving elderly kidnap victims often carry heightened urgency - medical vulnerability & increased physical risk. Sometimes, even with national attention, extensive resources, & long-term effort - families are left with uncertainty instead of closure.

Joining with the country in hoping Nancy will come home - and no matter what comes - the Guthries get answers & justice. 🙏

A legend can outlive the truth. 🕯️The new season of Southern Mysteries starts Monday with one of South Carolina’s most infamous legends.

On Edisto Island, there’s a brick mausoleum at the back of an old churchyard. The door is gone and the name “Legare” is carved over the entrance. For generations, locals have shared a story about what happened to a young woman named Julia inside the family tomb.

This episode traces how that legend took shape and what the record actually tells us about Julia Legare, her world on the Sea Islands, and the people whose lives never made it into the story.

“Buried Alive on Edisto Island” is available Monday 1/19 wherever you get your podcasts.

Across the South, when something terrible happened and no one could explain why, people looked for someone to blame. A healer. A midwife. A neighbor who lived outside the lines of what a community understood.

Those stories became warnings told after dark. Whispers about witches who cursed the land or called down storms. Tales of conjure men and cunning women whose names were spoken with caution.

This week on Southern Mysteries, we uncover the chilling history behind witch legends across the South and why fear turned real people into supernatural threats.

The new episode is available today wherever you listen to podcasts.
