BOMB THREAT WAS A HOAX: Regarding the cordoned off area in Custer last Saturday night: A bomb threat was called into Custer County dispatch, with the caller saying he had murdered his wife (later said partner) and placed a bomb at the Custer Volunteer Fire Department. The area was cordoned off and a bomb-sniffing dog from Ellsworth Air Force Base was called to Custer. The fire department and Custer City Hall were cleared, with no explosives found. It was later determined the call was a hoax, and originated outside of the area. Exactly where is still under investigation. This information is supplied by the Custer County Sheriff's Office. A full story on the event will be in Wednesday's Chronicle.

Wondering what all that smoke outside is about? It's a prescribed burn in Wind Cave National Park.

The primary objectives of the Lookout Flats Prescribed Fire are to reduce fuel loading, decrease encroachment of young ponderosa pine onto the prairie, and increase cover of native forbs. Prescribed fires help decrease the intensities of future wildfires and mimic the natural fire regimes of a mixed-grass prairie ecosystem.

Smoke may be heavy at times along highways 385 and 87 and visible from the surrounding region. Hwy 385 between the north and south access roads into the park headquarters will be closed, with traffic routed through the visitor center parking lot.

The Lookout Point, Highland Creek, and Wind Cave Canyon Trails will be closed during firing operations and longer if necessary. For additional information, visit:

Meet Rex! We're not for sure how old he is, as he was a stray. He is current on shots and will be neutered in the near future. He is very high energy, so a family that is very active outdoors would be a good fit for him. A fenced in yard would be great so he can go out and run and play.

If you would like to meet Rex, visit Battle Mountain Humane society seven days a week from 8 a.m. to noon or for more information please call 605-745-7283.

Question of the Week time!

This week's question is a familiar question, with a caveat. We know there was already an inch of snow in some spots of the high country last week, so tell us: What will be the date of our first significant snow (an inch or more) within the City of Custer?
