📰 Ex*****on Date Set in Alabama for 1997 Gas Station Murder Case
Alabama has scheduled the ex*****on of Geoffrey Todd West, who was convicted in the 1997 murder of Margaret Parrish Berry during a robbery at Harold’s Chevron in Attalla. The ex*****on is set to take place between midnight on Sept. 25 and 6 a.m. on Sept. 26, using nitrogen hypoxia — a method recently approved in the state.
West, a former employee of the store, was sentenced to death in 1999. His case remains one of the most haunting crimes in the history of Etowah County 🏛️ Historical Context for Alabama's Ex*****on
🔹 Alabama’s Ex*****on Legacy
Alabama has executed over 80 people since reinstating the death penalty in 1976.
Historically, the state used hanging (until 1927), then electrocution (famously via the “Yellow Mama” chair), and later lethal injection as the primary method.
In 2018, Alabama became the third U.S. state to authorize nitrogen hypoxia as an ex*****on method, although it was not used until 2024.
🔹 Nitrogen Hypoxia: A Controversial First
The method involves replacing oxygen with pure nitrogen, causing death by asphyxiation.
Alabama executed Kenneth Eugene Smith in January 2024 using nitrogen hypoxia—the first such ex*****on in U.S. and world history.
Witnesses reported that Smith convulsed and gasped for air for several minutes, raising ethical and humanitarian concerns5.
Despite this, Alabama has continued to schedule ex*****ons using this method, including the upcoming one for Geoffrey Todd West.
🔹 Legal and Ethical Debate
Critics, including the United Nations, have warned that nitrogen hypoxia may constitute cruel and unusual punishment.
Alabama officials maintain it is a humane alternative to lethal injection, which has faced drug shortages and botched attempts.

🕯️ Remembering the Missing: Alabama’s Unsolved Stories 🕯️

Every name represents a life—a daughter, a son, a friend—whose story remains unfinished. Across Alabama, families still wait for answers. From Montgomery to Mobile, from Troy to Talladega, these cold cases and missing persons remind us that remembrance is a form of justice.

📌 LaQuanta Riley, 18, vanished in Montgomery in 2003. 📌 Brittney Wood, 19, was last seen in Mobile in 2012. 📌 Lelia Faulkner, 29, disappeared from Troy in 2016. 📌 Stacey Lynch, 19, missing from Talladega since 2020. 📌 Susie Q. Bush, 33, last seen in Madison in 2022.

These are just a few of the many names etched into Alabama’s collective memory. Let us not forget them.

💬 If you have information, speak up. If you know someone who’s still searching, reach out. And if you’re reading this, take a moment to hold space for those who never came home.
