Today, we mourn the passing of Ozzy Osbourne, the legendary figure known as “The Prince of Darkness,” who left us at the age of 76. His musical journey began with the inspiration of The Beatles’ hit “She Loves You,” leading him to co-found Black Sabbath in 1968. After a successful 12-year tenure with the band, Ozzy embarked on a solo career with Blizzard of Ozz, releasing 13 studio albums from 1980 onward. His dynamic stage presence and theatrical performances earned him the title of the God of Metal, influencing countless artists and bands for generations. Through various projects, including the iconic Ozzfest, he created unforgettable experiences for fans across the globe. While we have lost a charismatic icon today, his music and legacy will endure, ensuring that the spirit of the Prince of Darkness lives on.

It’s Soundtrack Sunday. What better way to celebrate than with the movie Baby Driver? It’s about a getaway driver hired for a big job, and each job comes with its own soundtrack. The film features a cast that includes Ansel Elgort, Lily James, Jon Hamm, Jamie Foxx, and Kevin Spacey.

To kick off Freaky Friday, I found an artist named Sonny Charles who performed with The Steve Miller Band many years ago at Bluesfest. He was part of a band called the Check Mates Ltd., an American R&B group from Fort Wayne, Indiana. Discovered by Nancy Wilson, their biggest hit was “Black Pearl” from 1969, produced by Phil Spector. The song reached No. 13 on the U.S. pop chart. Their version of “Proud Mary” hit No. 30 on the UK Singles Chart in late 1969.

Today marks Freaky Friday, making it an ideal occasion to explore the captivating debut album “Beauty and the Beat” by the recently inducted Rock and Roll Hall of Fame band, The Go-Go’s. Released on July 14, 1981, under I.R.S. Records, this album features hit singles such as “Our Lips Are Sealed,” which reached number 20, and “We Got the Beat,” which soared to number 2 on the charts. Its commercial success and critical acclaim have solidified “Beauty and the Beat” as one of the most significant debut albums in music history, often regarded as a cornerstone of the American new wave genre.

The phrase “Be kind and rewind” was a quintessential expression in the past. For Tape Theme Thursday, I would like to highlight one of my favorite artists and, naturally, his outstanding album. “Reckless” is undoubtedly a masterpiece from beginning to end. There was no need for rewinding, as it seamlessly progressed forward.

Today is Tuesday, a fitting occasion to reflect on the legacy of Robert Plant, a prominent figure in rock music and the former lead singer of Led Zeppelin. In 1981, he formed The Honey Drippers, an English rock and roll band that included notable musicians such as Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, and original Judas Priest guitarist Ernest Chataway. The band released a single EP, titled The Honey Drippers: Volume One, on November 12, 1984. One of its standout tracks, “Sea of Love,” gained further recognition as the theme song for Al Pacino’s character, Detective Frank Keller, in the 1989 film Sea of Love, which also starred Ellen Barkin and John Goodman.

Gabriele Susanne Kerner, more widely recognized as Nena, is a German vocalist who achieved global recognition with her iconic single “99 Luftballons,” initially released in Germany, followed by an English rendition titled “99 Red Balloons,” which became popular in North America. The track has enjoyed international success in both its original and translated forms. A notable reference within the song is to William Shatner, famed for his portrayal of Captain Kirk in the original Star Trek series, which continues to captivate my interest to this day.

The Three Amigos

The men who risk their reputations every time they go on the air.

Ferris Kennedy:

Born in Quebec City, Canada to American parents, Ferris learned his appreciation of music very early on. His father was a Professor at Florida State University and his mother a clothing designer in Miami. Ferris lived with his parents and brother in Marco Island, Florida and spent most of his summers in Canada.

Ferris got his degree in Philosophy at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton. He became an icon at the University Radio Station, doing research on music as his past time, and was known for barging in on air just to talk with the hosts. The program director liked his spontaneous interruptions and gave him a weekly show called " What Really Grinds My Gears" a platform for him and listeners to rant about anything. Once Ferris graduated, and because of his huge passion for Grunge, he travelled to Seattle to learn more about the music of that era. Once done there, he crossed the border into Vancouver to begin his journey following his favourite artist, Bryan Adams. After following Bryan’s tour he made his way to Colombia where everything became somewhat of a blur...
