Most people dream of crossing Europe by car, train, or even sailboat.
A Finnish engineer had a different idea.
He wondered if it was possible to travel thousands of miles across open water without using a single drop of gasoline or diesel.
Instead of waiting for someone else to build such a vessel, he decided to build it himself.
That decision eventually became Helios 11, an 11-meter electric boat designed from the ground up by Finnish engineer Lukas Sjöman.
At first glance, Helios 11 looks like a modern houseboat with a roof covered in solar panels.
But those panels are far more than decoration.
They are the boat's primary source of energy.
Ten rooftop solar panels collect sunlight throughout the day, converting it into electricity that charges a 24-kilowatt-hour battery pack. That stored energy powers a quiet 6-kilowatt electric motor, allowing the boat to continue moving even when clouds pass overhead or after sunset.
Unlike conventional boats that rely on fuel tanks, Helios 11 depends almost entirely on the energy arriving from the sky.
On bright days, its solar array can generate as much as 4,000 watts of electricity.
Building a boat capable of crossing thousands of nautical miles is already a difficult engineering challenge.
Building one that can complete the journey using only solar-generated electricity is even more ambitious.
Sjöman spent years designing and assembling the vessel himself.
He estimates that the materials cost around $20,700, a fraction of what a commercially manufactured solar-powered boat of similar size would typically cost. Comparable professionally built models often sell for $69,000 to $92,000.
The project wasn't about building a luxury yacht.
It was about proving that practical, long-distance travel using renewable energy could be possible.
Then came the real test.
Rather than demonstrating the boat on a lake or making a short coastal trip, Sjöman embarked on a months-long voyage across Europe.
As Helios 11 moved through rivers, canals, and coastal waters, the distance continued to grow.
Hundreds of miles became thousands.
Eventually, the boat reached one of its biggest milestones.
More than 3,000 nautical miles, equivalent to about 5,560 kilometers, had been completed before arriving on Spain's Mediterranean coast.
According to Sjöman, the entire journey was powered only by electricity generated from the boat's solar panels.
Stories like this often spread quickly online, and some social media posts claimed that Helios 11 could "run forever."
That description, however, needs important context.
The boat isn't creating unlimited energy.
It still depends entirely on sunlight.
When weather conditions are favorable, the solar panels recharge the battery while also supplying power to the motor. During extended periods of poor sunlight, the available energy naturally becomes more limited.
In other words, the boat demonstrates the potential of renewable energy, not perpetual motion.
Even so, the achievement remains remarkable.
For generations, boats have been associated with diesel engines, fuel tanks, and emissions.
Helios 11 offers a different vision.
It shows that careful engineering, efficient design, and renewable energy can work together in ways that once seemed impossible.
Projects like this are also reminders that innovation doesn't always begin inside massive corporations or billion-dollar research labs.
Sometimes it begins with one person willing to ask an unusual question and spend years turning that question into reality.
Whether solar-powered boats become common in the future remains to be seen.
But one thing is already certain.
When Helios 11 quietly crossed more than 3,000 nautical miles using energy collected from the sun, it demonstrated that cleaner forms of long-distance travel are no longer just ideas on paper.
They are already navigating real waters.
