Each year, the small unincorporated community of Knobtown, Mississippi—home to fewer than 400 residents—welcomes thousands of visitors for its annual Black History Parade. Now in its 29th year, the parade has grown into a cherished tradition, bringing families together from across the country to celebrate Black history, unity, and resilience.

The Mississippi Senate passed a $326 million tax cut bill on Monday, setting up negotiations with the House over whether it’s better to tweak or totally transform the state’s tax code.

If enacted, Senate Bill 3095 would lower Mississippi’s income tax from 4% to 2.99% by 2030 and cut the sales tax on groceries from 7% to 5% in July 2026. It would also increase the gasoline tax by nine cents per gallon over three years to fund road and bridge maintenance.

As of 2023, there are almost 3,000 wells and 500 platforms that are overdue for decommissioning in the Gulf, according to a report from the Government Accountability Office. That same GAO report also says the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) and the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) aren’t doing enough to make sure this infrastructure is getting cleaned up.

In gas stations and v**e shops across Mississippi you can find dozens of hemp-based products that promise a “legal high” by mimicking the psychoactive effects of cannabis. Unlike medical cannabis sold in the state, these products are not required to be tested.

During a Senate Public Health Committee hearing, cannabis researchers and health officials told lawmakers that independent testing of these products has shown that many of them pose a public health risk. That risk comes from both the presence of harmful materials in the finished products and much higher THC levels than are advertised.

If you ask Wyatt Emmerich, owner of the Clarksdale Press Register, the city's lawsuit against his paper is the result of a contentious relationship that started more than four years ago.

“... with reporting that the mayor and the city council gave themselves shockingly big raises. We reported on it, the citizens got outraged, and the Mayor didn’t really see why we needed to report on that. And it’s just gone on since then,” Emmerich told MPB News.

Dressed in a red tie-dyed shirt and jeans, Tougaloo assistant professor Ann McPhail stands unassumingly in front of a small, ivory colored headstone. As a group of eight tourists approaches her, McPhail assumes her character.

“The people here at the cemetery say my marker is the oldest in here for a black person,” she said. “I don't know if that's true or not but the one thing I do know, I am older than the state of Mississippi. My name is Jesse Hobbs and I was born in 1810.”

Hobbs was a formerly enslaved woman who died in 1856 and was buried at the Greenwood Cemetery in Jackson. The cemetery is famous for being the final resting place for past governors, authors and soldiers.

Since his appointment to the U.S. Senate in 2007, the war in Ukraine has been by far the most serious geopolitical crisis Mississippi Republican Roger Wicker has had to navigate.

The former House member and state lawmaker assumed lead of the chamber’s Armed Services Committee, which oversees the entirety of the Department of Defense, earlier this year.

But Wicker has long been an influential voice in debates over defense policy and national security, often in opposition to members of his own party suggesting U.S. aid provided to Ukraine should be cut.
