A reminder once again. Slavery is not a “Lineage”. It is a condition. Your identity is not based on a condition.

You are not American Descendants of Slavery. You are Descendants of Africans Enslaved In The United States. A nuance to some of you. But the correct distinction matters.

Some want to dismiss Africa and claim to “native Black” as though the majority of your genetic makeup is of indigenous tribes here in North America. Do a genetic test and then tell me how much indigenous blood you have.

Glad I got that off my chest. Don’t fall for the Tricks and Slick talk from those who wish to divide. 🔴⚫️🟢 #WeNeedAnRBGFlagEmoji

Ibtihaj Muhammad- Olympic and 5-time World Medalist 🏅🏅🏅🏅🏅

Ibtihaj is a sabre fencer and the first Muslim-American athlete to earn a medal at the Olympics (2016). Born in Maplewood, NJ Ibtihaj joined the fencing team at her High School at 13yrs old. In 2002 she joined the Peter Westbrook foundation and was invited to train under the Westbrook foundation's Elite Athlete Program in New York City. She graduated with a dual Bachelor's in International Relations and African and African American studies.

Sergeant Andrea Motley (Crabtree) became the first Army woman to graduate from the Second Class Diver Course in 1982. She completed an intensive Naval training program that had over a 70% attrition rate. SGT Crabtree was assigned as a diver at the U.S. Army Petroleum Distribution System, in Korea, where she and one other woman were forced to reclassify when the military occupational specialty 00B (diver) was restricted to only men. It would be more than a decade before the field re-opened to women. She retired in 1998 with 21 years of service in the United States Army.

I salute you, Sergeant (RET) Crabtree. ✊🏾#OurHistory #YourHistory #HerStory

The Greensboro Four, civil rights activists

On February 1, 1960 four freshman at North Carolina A&T State University, Franklin McCain, Joseph McNeil, Ezell Blair, Jr., and David Richmond, took seats at the segregated lunch counter of F.W. Woolworth's in Greensboro, NC. They were refused service and sat peacefully until the store closed. They returned the next day along with 25 other students, again they were denied. The Greensboro Four inspired sit-ins across the state and eventually the entire South. Finally in July, Woolworth's integrated all of its stores. ✊🏾

Today I honor The Greensboro Four. #BlackHistory #YourHistory #MyHistory #GreensboroFour #NCATstateUniversity #HBCU

Henry Lewis became the first African American to lead a symphony orchestra in the United States.

Lewis was born in Los Angeles, and from the age of five, he began studying piano. He later learned to play the clarinet as well as several string instruments. At the age of 16, he joined the Los Angeles Philharmonic, becoming the first black instrumentalist in a major orchestra. After six years as a double-bassist with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, he played with and conducted the Seventh Army Symphony while serving in the United States Armed Forces (1955-1956).

He gained national recognition in 1961 when he was appointed assistant conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic under Zubin Mehta, a post he held until 1965. Lewis moved to Newark, NJ, where in 1968, he became conductor and music director of the New Jersey Symphony, a small community ensemble. He transformed the ensemble into a nationally recognized orchestra that yearly performed more than a hundred concerts, including outreach programs for local communities, and in 1972, he debuted at the New York Metropolitan Opera, conducting Puccini's La Boheme. From 1960 to 1979, he was married to famed opera singer Marilyn Horne, who considered him her "teacher and right hand.”

After retiring from the New Jersey Symphony in 1976, Lewis continued to tour as a guest conductor for 20 years until his death at the age of 63. He was the first black person to become a regular conductor of a major American symphony orchestra. During a musical career that spanned nearly five decades, Henry Lewis gained wide respect as a conductor, instrumentalist, and pioneer in the classical music world.

Mr.Lewis, I salute you on this day. #OurHistory #Orchestra #YourHistory 🎶

“Lift Every Voice and Sing” is a hymn written as a poem by James Weldon Johnson in 1900. It was set to music by His Brother, J. Rosamond Johnson in 1905. In 1919 the NAACP coined it “the Negro national anthem” for its power in voicing a cry for liberation and affirmation for African American people.

Every time I hear our song I swell with pride. I feel the words, I let them pierce my skin, and I cry. Every. Single. Time. 🥲

To these 5 Men of the singing group “Committed”, I salute and celebrate you. #OurHistory #LiftEveryVoiceAndSing #MyAnthem #OurAnthem ✊🏾

The phrase "Cake Walk”, like many other racist terms, is ubiquitous in American English. Cake Walks were originally done as entertainment for slave-owning whites. In a Cake Walk, the slave would be dressed in the master’s clothes and made to parade around as if they were members of high white society. The slaves who did the best impression of their masters, won the cake.

It was entertainment and a contest performed under duress and aided only in further humiliating people in bondage. Other words and phrases to reconsider: Master Bedroom, Peanut Gallery, Grandfathered In/out, Lynch Mob, blackball, sold down the river, Cup of Joe.
