In Zhejiang Province, China, a woman arranged a blind date with a man she met through a matchmaker, hoping to explore a potential relationship. However, she decided to bring an unusually large group along 23 of her family members claiming it was a “test of generosity” to see how the man would respond. The dinner, which was supposed to be a casual meeting between two people, quickly escalated into a massive affair. The total bill for the meal reached 20,000 yuan (approximately $2,812), an amount that far exceeded the expectations of the man, named Liu.
Unprepared for such a situation and feeling blindsided, Liu chose to leave the restaurant without paying the bill. This left the woman responsible for covering the cost of her entire group, creating a significant financial burden. Feeling wronged, she decided to sue Liu, demanding that he pay for the entire bill.
The court, however, ruled in Liu’s favor. It stated that he was only responsible for his own meal and
the woman’s meal, which totaled approximately 4,000 yuan (approximately $562). The court did not hold him liable for the expenses incurred by her 23 relatives, emphasizing that bringing a large group without prior notice was unreasonable.
The story went viral on social media, sparking debate about personal responsibility, generosity, and ethics on blind dates. While some criticized the woman for her unusual approach, many supported Liu’s decision, praising the court’s ruling as fair and rational.
