In the Spring of 2024, the Dallas Park and Recreation Department put out a request for proposals to have an official beekeeper for the entire park system. This was a way to streamline, for this first time, the process of bee removals throughout city parks and trails. We were honored to be selected in that RFP process and have been working with the city this past year.

Every once in a while, removals can be very unique. Most recently, we removed a colony that had built behind an old tennis backboard at a rec center. No one had any idea as to how thick this backboard was, because it’s decades old. It was a challenge to even get the right concrete saw that would work! Interesting fact, though…this backboard actually had TWO colonies (one on each side)!!! We completed removal on the left side and will be headed out soon to take care of the right side.

You never know what you’ll get in the “day of a life of a beekeeper.” 🪚🔨🐝

During this first , probably a couple more to come, we took the opportunity to feed this yard and apply a round of Oxalic Acid. We’re trying the fondant this year which fits nicely with the 3/8” shim that we have on our migratory lids.

The Oxalic Acid application is very effective this time of year when the hives have very little brood and therefore few caps for the mites to hide under. The fondant is cheap insurance to get them through these cold spells and into the true Spring without having to install feeding shims or additional equipment.
