🚌 One of the coolest things I’ve done in Dallas this year: a bus tour of Black history, culture, and cuisine.

It’s called , and it’s part moving classroom, part food tour, part networking event.

I went on the Juneteenth tour. That included stops at Cedar Crest Golf Course, The Flats in Garland, meals included with lunch at , and the actual General Order No. 3 at the Hall of State. Every detail was thought through, even the bus itself, provided by Black-owned Game Time Transportation.

I sat down with the founder, , to hear why she built this in 2017.

The best carnitas I’ve ever eaten came from someone’s backyard in Ennis, Texas. 🐖

Oscar Conejo and his family have been perfecting this recipe for decades and the results are extraordinary. Fresh corn tortillas, tender carnitas, and do not skip the cueritos. Worth every minute of the drive.

Saturday and Sunday only, 8am until 1pm (or sold out – get there early).

There are two locations, I went to the house. Highly recommend it for the full experience.

One of the most legendary Japanese restaurants in Texas has been cooking from an Irving strip mall for 30 years. 🇯🇵

📍Mr. Max Izakaya - 3028 N Belt Line Rd, Irving, Tx 75062

Founded in 1996 by the beloved Hare Nakamura, Mr. Max is the original izakaya in North Texas.

Today, chefs Mamoru Tokeshi and Akio Hirota carry the legacy forward with the same menu and the same spirit that made this place a legend.

🍜 Don’t skip the tonkotsu ramen, the fresh sashimi, or the takoyaki. And make a reservation before you go.

This Argentine/Indonesian empanada shop in Irving is one of a kind. 🇦🇷🇮🇩

Founded by Argentine Raul Gordon and his Indonesian wife Miming, Empa Mundo serves 18 hand-made empanada flavors with fillings spanning Latin America, Indonesia, and Texas.

The dough is a family secret. The Mimi Special eats like an Indonesian samosa. The Argentina Chorizo will make Messi sweat. And the Texas Tw***ie is pure North Texas on a plate.

Individual empanadas start at about $5, with discounts the more you order.

He’s selling $1 hotdogs in Dallas so no one has to go hungry.

For the past 8 years, Tony Vann has been running Dollar Dogs in a food desert, selling $1 hot dogs (pork or turkey) and bringing the whole neighborhood together.

You’ll also find gumbo, snow cones, and a flea market filled with TVs, chairs, and other hidden gems at prices that actually make sense.

Dollar Dogs doesn’t have a social media presence. Tony moves locations depending on the weather, but you can usually find him near the end of the Cedar Crest Bridge Gateway on Cedar Crest Blvd. in Dallas.

A former fine dining chef is making some of the best Detroit pizza in the country out of a Kendall strip mall. 🍕

📍 Vice City Pizza - 2615 SW 147th Ave, Miami, FL 33175

Vice City Pizza in Kendall has been praised by The Infatuation, landed on the NYT’s Top 25 Restaurants in Miami list, and kept people driving across town for another slice.

Not bad for a spot operating out of a former Quiznos.

Chef Carlos Estarita is a Miami native who has cooked at some of the most acclaimed restaurants in the world. That includes a stint at Maido in Lima back in 2016, when it was ranked eighth in the world. It’s now number one. He also cooked at Zuma Miami, Coya London, Roka Mayfair, and Michy’s under Michelle Bernstein.

Vice City came together after his fine dining gig at Shoto in Washington D.C. shut down during the pandemic. When he got back home, he started slinging pies out of his backyard. That turned into a pop-up at Bar Abi Maria. Then it became this.

The pies are built from scratch on an 80% hydration dough that bakes up shatteringly crispy on the bottom and pillowy inside. The toppings push the limits of what you expect from a Detroit pie. Ropa Vieja. Truffle Honey Ricotta Mushroom. Combinations that have no business working as well as they do.

This is what happens when a world-class chef stops chasing stars and starts chasing something that actually makes people happy.

Carlos and I go all the way back to middle school at Lamar Louise Curry. Two Kendall kids who love food, reuniting over Detroit pizza. What a joy.
