Those who go before to mark and improve the route are the pioneers. Their critical moments of decision must be based upon faith alone - the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen (Heb. 11:1). Pioneers are those who face trials with no experience, only discipline, determination, and devotion.
Pioneering was a practice of Eastern monarchs, who, whenever they entered on a journey or expedition, especially through a barren and unfrequented or inhospitable country, sent forerunners, or pioneers, before them to prepare the way. Over time, as more people came over the trail, it was improved, widened, and smoothed. However, it all began with one man. That man then led others, and it multiplied from there.
In Isaiah 40, we find an example of this through John the Baptist, who was one man "crying in the wilderness," yet he prepared the way for the Son of God.
Each of us is a pioneer, marking and improving the trail through the conduct of our lives. Our words and deeds pave the way for others to answer God's call at another time. So persevere our fellow pioneers, and remember that when the storms around you rage, and the voices of doubt ring loud, no weapon forged against you will prevail, and you will refute every tongue that accuses you (Is. 54:17).
