In December 2008, the Hanson family traveled to Guatemala to visit their son Phillip and set out on what they expected to be an unforgettable hike up Pacaya volcano. But when a recent lava flow forced their guide onto an unstable new route, the adventure became a nightmare as molten boulders began cascading toward the hikers. With their guide gone and no safe way down, the family scrambled across jagged rocks while Phillip directed them away from the falling lava. When a refrigerator-sized boulder barreled toward Phillip’s brother Adrian and a young boy, Adrian pushed the child out of its path and leaped to safety—saving the boy’s life. Despite countless narrow misses, everyone survived with only minor injuries, a miraculous outcome the Hansons credit to divine timing. Adrian passed away 12 years later, leaving his family especially grateful for the additional years they were given with their heroic brother.
