Six years ago, I provided color mockups for the historic Eilenberger's Bakery in Palestine, Texas. No one was really doing black exteriors at the time, and the painter thought I was crazy. Looking at it now, I feel it was successful. The entire building had already been painted except for the upper 2-story facade. I lobbied to keep that little bit of original brick for its textural interest, which I also believe was the correct decision.

Their logo colors were red and green, from the fruitcakes they're famous for. I thought that felt too "Christmas-y" for year-round use, so I switched to green as the dominant color, and no red outside.

Let me give you some of the best free color advice you'll ever get, if you're planning a remodel or new build. Don't ever choose wall and especially cabinet colors, until you know your countertop, backsplash and/or floor tile.

Even if you plan to get "just white."

There is no such thing as "just white" in materials. Like all colors, every white or gray comes from some part of the color wheel. Most of the popular whites you see used are from the Yellow or Green-Yellow part of the wheel. Depending on what they are placed next to, they can appear to clash, even when it's another white.

A real color specialist will have devices to measure your materials and gather scientific data about their color, making the selection of paints relatively easy.

Because countertops are typically the most expensive element of your reno, and offer far fewer choices in color than paint, it's best to nail them down first.

Remember that no material offers as many color choices as paint. Plus, painting cabinets is expensive - you don't want to do it twice.

Just having a fan deck and an opinion doesn't necessarily make you a "color consultant".

As the corporate world catches on to this need for assistance in choosing colors (which I identified nearly 20 years ago), many paint companies are trying to cash in on the trend. Some offer "free" advice, if you buy their products. But their personnel are not trained in color science, and provide only a limited selection of colors within their own brand.

Rather than finding the ideal color, the customer is left to settle for whatever is on that company's fan deck.

A trained and certified Color Consultant, on the other hand, knows how to use color science for a more precise result. We understand the color wheel, the principles of Hue, Value and Chroma, and how to adjust those values to find the color you need.

We also carry thousands and thousands more colors from which to select. I personally keep at least 10 fan decks, including Behr, PPG, Sherwin Williams, Pratt and Lambert, and the entire Benjamin Moore collections from the past two decades.

Paint has become increasingly expensive, as has the labor to have your home repainted. This makes hiring a professional a better idea than ever - in the long run, they'll save you time AND money!

Testing white and off white colors - important tip:

While the introduction of sample quarts/pints has made trying color easier and more affordable, it doesn't always work when testing very light colors. That's because all paint formulas are based on a gallon - when this formula must be divided down into the smaller size, if it doesn't divide evenly, the color will be "rounded off".
In a gallon of a medium to dark color, this wouldn't make any noticeable difference.

But when the color you're trying to produce has very little pigment, and you are adding (or leaving out) color within a small quantity, the difference can be significant. It may vary enough from the chip that it doesn't quite work anymore with your other finishes.
So, when putting up test patches of potential paint colors, go ahead and use the samples for medium colors. But if you're trying to select a white, bite the bullet and get it in the first gallon of the REAL PAINT. Same product, same sheen that you or the painter will use.
