Montenegro is the destination I keep recommending and people keep thanking me for.

You can drive it end to end in under three hours, but it packs in medieval walled cities, fortress islands, superyacht marinas, the deepest canyon in Europe, and an Adriatic coastline that rivals Croatia at a fraction of the crowds. It only became independent in 2006 and there's something wonderfully unfinished about it, in the best sense.

Go in May or September. That's the version of Montenegro worth experiencing.
