There won’t be a Westworld season 5 as HBO cancels the show

James Marsden and Evan Rachel Wood in Westworld

It’s the end of the line for Westworld: the fourth season of the show that aired earlier this year will be the last one, with HBO announcing that the series has been canceled ahead of an expected fifth and final season.

The news comes via The Hollywood Reporter (opens in new tab) and other outlets (opens in new tab), with a statement from HBO praising the team behind the series, starting with the husband-and-wife duo of Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy who created the show.

“Over the past four seasons, Lisa and Jonah have taken viewers on a mind-bending odyssey, raising the bar at every step,” the statement reads. “We are tremendously grateful to them, along with their immensely talented cast, producers and crew, and all of our partners at Kilter Films, Bad Robot and Warner Bros. Television. It’s been a thrill to join them on this journey.”

Nolan and Joy had previously gone on record as wanting to have the opportunity to wrap up loose ends and to bring the series to a definite conclusion. Season four ended rather ambiguously – which was by no means unusual for Westworld.

“Making Westworld has been one of the highlights of our careers,” said Nolan and Joy in their own statement. “We are deeply grateful to our extraordinary cast and crew for creating these indelible characters and brilliant worlds. We’ve been privileged to tell these stories about the future of consciousness – both human and beyond – in the brief window of time before our AI overlords forbid us from doing so.”

The Westworld story

Taking most of its inspiration from the 1973 film of the same name, Westworld was initially set in a futuristic theme park populated by AI-controlled robots. Designed to look something like the American Old West, the park gave its human visitors the opportunity to live out role plays and fantasies.

As you might expect, things soon started going wrong at the park. The four seasons that the show ran for took viewers on a journey through the ideas of free will, consciousness, artificial intelligence, morality and technological advancement. The scope of the show expanded to other theme parks and eventually real world settings.

It attracted its fair share of star power too: Evan Rachel Wood, Thandiwe Newton, Tessa Thompson, Aaron Paul, Jeffrey Wright, Ed Harris, Anthony Hopkins, James Marsden and Jimmi Simpson were some of the actors that showed up on screen. The series earned 54 Emmy nominations and nine wins throughout the course of its run.

In the end though, it seems it couldn’t maintain enough of an audience for HBO to keep it going. Strong viewing figures during season one declined season after season, with some critics complaining that the various ins and outs of the show – involving jumps in time, memory and reality – were too difficult to keep up with.

Ultimately HBO didn’t provide a reason why Westworld has been canned, whether because of budget cuts or viewing figures or anything else – but it’s clear that the series ended up as not quite the force it was at the beginning.

Logitech’s new hybrid working range includes a self-directing camera

Logitech has revealed its new Logic of Work platform, a line of products and services geared towards improving collaboration and engagement between those working from home and those in the office.

The new launches include Sight, a 315-degree camera placed at the center of a conference table that can intelligently shift focus on individuals. It’s is designed to be used in conjunction with Logitech’s Rally Bar range of forward-facing cameras, connected via an ethernet cable and controlled through the CollabOS video conferencing software.

Other competitors already offer full 360-degree cameras for this purpose, but Logitech argues that these can distort perspective and still prohibit inclusion within a hybrid working environment. The company maintains that their multi-camera setup offers a more effective solution.

AI Director

At the heart of Sight is what Logitech dubs the AI director, which allows the camera to automatically shift focus onto those that are speaking around the table. The seven in-built microphones feature acoustic beams which calculate the time of attack of speech sounds to know who is talking when, and then adjusts the camera to capture them face on.

Sight can be fixed in place via a clamp, in a grommet, or elsewhere in your floor space thanks to the optional tripod. It also has a sliding lens cap to give you peace of mind from prying eyes when no meetings are taking place.

At a launch event in London attended by TechRadar Pro, Logitech was open about its R&D process, detailing the failed attempts leading up the development of the Sight. One of these made “uncanny valley” avatars of the people in the room, but thankfully this was scraped.

Other products

Another product part of this new vector for the company is Scribe, a camera that goes above a whiteboard and digitally converts scribbles in real time, resulting in tidy representations for others to see.

In addition to business, education was also highlighted as a new focus for Logitech, with the company believing that hybrid arrangements will soon be commonplace in schools and universities as well. The company’s Crayon, designed for the new range of iPads, is aimed at students of all age groups, offering a more competitively priced alternative to the Apple Pencil.

The Crayon and Scribe are both available now, and the Sight is expected to arrive summer 2023 with a price of $1,999/ £1,745.

How to get Glastonbury tickets: 4 killer tips to improve your chances

For music lovers all over the world it’s already time to think about festival season because Glastonbury 2023 tickets are about to go on sale. Sunday November 6 is the day to set your alarm for and prepare yourself for 20 minutes of pure stress as the tickets fly off the shelves at breakneck speed. If you don’t want to be the one left staring at the terrible ‘all tickets are now sold out’ message, then here are some killer tips on how to get a Glastonbury ticket.

Officially released on Sunday November 6 at 9am GMT, getting a Glastonbury 2023 ticket is always a seriously tough gig but the good news is that technology is here to help, if you know which to use.

From exploiting the power of the best VPN services to buddying up with friends to increase your chances, below are the top tips to successfully land your next Glastonbury ticket.

Use a VPN to change your country

Rumors are spreading about the possibility that there could be a certain amount of tickets allotted to different countries. If that’s the case, changing your location with a VPN could help you tap into a less competitive pool of buyers.

That’s because a VPN is a tool that can mask your real location, making you appear to be in any country in the world with just a couple of clicks. All the top services boast a huge array of international servers dotted across the world you can connect to – USA, Australia, Canada, Papua New Guinea, wherever you like. Give it a whirl!

Use a VPN on all your devices to vary IPs

You can open as many browsers and tabs on all the devices you like but if they’re all connected to your home internet, then it will be clear to the Glastonbury website servers that it’s just you, and they’re all coming from one place. That’s because they will all have the same IP address.

Instead, increase your chances of getting Glastonbury 2023 tickets by using all your devices, using a VPN on all of them, to mix up IP addresses. This may make it appear that you’re more than one person.

For even better results, try to connect each device to totally different server locations. Our favorite ExpressVPN has over 3,000 to choose from. That’s a lot of tickets to the Glastonbury lottery!

Club together with your friends

If you’ve got mates who are going, all of you should be having a bash at getting tickets at the same time. If one gets in, buy tickets for everyone and then get paid back.

One person can buy up to six Glastonbury tickets at the same time. Even more if everyone in your group tries his luck from multiple devices simultaneously, and, ideally with different IPs too.

Try using 4G instead of Wi-Fi

Bit of a mystery but many people online swear that your chances can increase simply by using 4G instead of Wi-Fi. That’s mainly to avoid crowded networks like the one in your workplace, or any other public Wi-Fi, giving you more capacity on a given connection to the web.

A stronger connection is a key here, too. Beating the queue is one thing but you need to be fast to move quickly from page to page to make sure to get your Glastonbury tickets before they run out.

Which VPN do we recommend for getting Glastonbury tickets?

How to buy Glastonbury 2023 tickets

In an effort to clamp down on ticket touting, anyone who would like to attend the festival needs to be registered on the website (opens in new tab) prior to the ticket sale. The registration period unfortunately closed on Monday 31st October, so you cannot place your purchase if you miss that date.

Music lovers who successfully filled the registration form in time can soon buy Glastonbury 2023 tickets exclusively via the event’s official website (opens in new tab).

What time do Glastonbury tickets go on sale?

While coach ticket are now sold out after just one day from being released, general admission tickets for Glastonbury 2023 are available to buy from the event’s official website from Sunday November 6 at 9am GMT.

At the time of writing, there’s no date set for Glastonbury 2023 tickets resale.

How much are Glastonbury 2023 tickets

Glastonbury 2023 tickets cost a total of £340 (£335 + £5 of booking fee), with the price including general admission for the full weekend. When you purchase your ticket in November, you will only be required to pay a deposit of £50. The balance will need to be paid off in the first week of April 2023.

Glastonbury ticket pricing saw a considerable rise from last edition’s cost of £265 plus a £5 of booking fee. That’s around 19% more in just one year. And, while many fans expressed their dismay on social media, festival co-organizer Emily Eavis blamed the increase in costs (opens in new tab) of running such big events.

When is Glastonbury 2023?

As tradition, Glastonbury 2023 is set to take place over the last week of June, specifically from Wednesday 21 to Sunday 25 June 2023.

Glastonbury 2023 tickets release times

As we mentioned above, Glastonbury 2023 tickets will be released on Sunday November 6 at 9 am UK time.

This means that fans around Europe will have the starting time pushed by one or two hours, depending on the countries they are in. Similarly, US music lovers will need to set an alarm around 5am ET (if living on the east coast) or around 2am PT for those booking from the pacific side instead. While, Aussie festival goers can chill until 8pm AEDT before rushing to secure their tickets.

Can I buy Glastonbury tickets from overseas?

Yes, there are no limitations from where you can buy Glastonbury 2023 tickets.

As we have seen before, changing your device country location with a secure VPN service could actually boost your chances of bagging your entrance card.

What kind of Glastonbury 2023 tickets are there?

Beside the combo of festival ticket and coach fare, there are many types of entrances you can choose from.

You can pay an additional fee of £55 for adding a car park pass to your entrance. Likewise, you can pay a starting fee of £150 to secure a place for your caravan. You can even hire tipis to share with your family and friends – each can accommodate up to six adults. This costs £1500 to hire, to pay in full at the time of booking.

There will also be some Sunday tickets exclusively available for Somerset residents.

How do I get to Glastonbury 2023

As festival organizers point out, coaches are the best way to get to the Glastonbury festival. The event’s official partner, National Express, will run services from over 70 locations directly to the festival site. You can check and book your route here (opens in new tab).

If you are thinking of coming by train, the closest station is Castle Cary. Here, there will be a free shuttle bus running throughout the event days.

Those coming by car or campervan should keep in mind that, despite the name, the festival is not actually located in the town of Glastonbury. As with previous events, Glastonbury 2023 will be held at Worthy Farm which is in Pilton, in Somerset.

Glastonbury children’s tickets

If you are thinking of heading to the festival with all your family, good news: kids under 12 go free!

Glastonbury festival is a popular destination for families, too. So, nothing to worry about. Just make sure to keep an eye on the youngest family members at all times.

Get Glastonbury tickets: what to do if you miss out

If you miss out on the registration end date, don’t panic. There’s still another chance around April when returned tickets get resold. So, you still have a chance to land your Glastonbury 2023 spot. Plus, you can always work there and get in for free.

The Samsung Galaxy S23 is expected in the first week of February 2023

The Samsung Galaxy S22 family of phones

Most of the Samsung Galaxy S23 rumors that we’ve heard so far have been pointing towards a February 2023 launch, but a new report adds some extra precision: apparently the flagship phone is going to show up at the start of that month.

According to South Korean outlet Chosun (opens in new tab) (via SamMobile (opens in new tab)), the launch is scheduled for “the first week” of February 2023 – though as the month starts on a Wednesday it’s not clear if that means before the first weekend or in the first seven days.

The report goes on to say that Samsung is planning to hold an in-person media briefing for the Galaxy S23 series in San Francisco, California. If that happens, it would be the first such event since 2020 (for obvious pandemic-related reasons).

A few days early

Another tidbit included in this latest rumor is that the Galaxy S23 phones are going to be actually on sale and in people’s hands by February 17. Apparently “intensifying competition” is the reason Samsung wants to get the devices out as quickly as possible.

Those of you with good memories may recall that the Samsung Galaxy S22 phones were first unveiled on Wednesday, February 9, 2022 – so it seems as though next year’s batch are going to show up slightly earlier, albeit only by a few days.

The rest of the report doesn’t reveal too much else that hasn’t already been previously rumored, but the specificity of the launch window here is significant. If you’ve got your eye on the Samsung Galaxy S23, you might want to start saving.

Analysis: sticking to the schedule

There’s a reassuring familiarity to the scheduling of all the major flagship phone launches these days, which certainly makes it easier to plan ahead and get ready for a new phone upgrade – particularly if you’re considering switching between makes and models.

While the latest report that we’ve covered here talks about Samsung releasing the Galaxy S23 earlier than normal to improve sales, the launch window is actually very similar to the one for the Galaxy S22. The Galaxy S21 range was actually announced in January 2021, while the Galaxy S20 phones made their debut in February 2020.

Apple can usually be relied upon when it comes to phone launch timings as well: September is typically new iPhone month, though the iPhone 12 didn’t show up until October 2020 because of supply chain problems brought on by the coronavirus pandemic and several knock-on effects.

Of course if we know when phones are coming out then so do the manufacturers – and that makes it somewhat trickier for these phone makers to get a march on their rivals. Ultimately it’ll be the quality of the Galaxy S23 rather than its launch date that determines how much of a success it’s going to be.

Here’s everything we know about the Samsung Galaxy S23 so far

Audio-Technica’s two new record players are the epitome of retro cool

Audio-Technica has announced the welcome return of one of the company’s most striking device’s, after unveiling a rejigged version of the ’80s-tastic Sound Burger portable record player.

First released in 1983 at the height of the portable audio boom, the AT770 Sound Burger (also known as the Mister Disc in the US) was a take-anywhere record player which came with a set of fold-away headphones and could run off three 2 batteries.

It featured a DC motor with a belt drive and could play 33 1/3 and 45 RPM records.

Released to mark the Japanese company’s 60th anniversary, this new 2022 version maintains the same unique design, but brings with it a few 21st century updates.

There’s now Bluetooth connectivity and a more convenient built-in lithium-ion battery with USB-C charging for 12 hours of continuous playback. There’s no extendable cord hanger for your headphones this time out, nor does the resurrected Sound Burger include a set of foldaway headphones.

You can however rig it up to a sound system via RCA cable, while the new model comes with Audio-Technica’s ATN3600L stylus pre-installed.

Alongside the Sound Burger, Audio-Technica has also revealed a new high-end, manual belt-drive turntable with a unique see-through housing.

Limited to just 3,000 units worldwide, the AT-LP2022 features a mounted black AT-VM95E cartridge alongside a clear AT-VMN95SH Shibata stylus, while the 30mm thick acrylic chassis rests on isolation feet that are height-adjustable, reducing unwanted resonances. To complete the look. there’s a matching see-through platter that further helps to reveal the deck’s innards.

The 2022 Sound Burger and the AT-LP2022 are both available to buy now, with the former priced at $199/£200/€229 and the latter priced at US $1200/ £999/€1199.

Opinion: Audio-Technica’s anniversary decks look set to have vintage audio fans partying

While the original Sound Burger perhaps didn’t quite achieve its goal of being the Sony Walkman for vinyl records, it remains an A/V design classic that’s coveted by collectors.

This new model will have retro gear heads jumping for joy, while its surprisingly reasonable price tag is likely to have antique audiophile dealers shaking their fists at the skies, what with the original ’80s model regularly changing hands for as much as £500 on eBay these days.

The more conventional, but no less eye-catching AT-VMN95SH will also be a big hit with nostalgic types thanks to its classic design, while that Shibata stylus should ensure it’s a deck to be reckoned with.

Elon Musk’s $7.99 ‘Twitter Blue with verification’ is launching on iOS

https://dallasnewsjournal.com/elon-musks-7-99-twitter-blue-with-verification-is-launching-on-ios/

Twitter’s app on iOS has been updated to support Elon Musk’s $7.99 per month Twitter Blue. The app’s latest update on the Apple App Store says you have to pay for Blue to get verified on the platform “just like the celebrities, companies, and politicians you already follow.”

The new Twitter Blue subscription isn’t available just yet, though. Esther Crawford, a product manager at Twitter confirmed it’s not live right now, but says some users “may see us making updates because we are testing and pushing changes in real-time.”

What is live immediately within the updated app is a revamped notifications screen that defaults to displaying tweets from Verified users in the first tab — helping to promote the idea that paying for the new plan is the best way to make sure people actually see your tweets.

The app displays a “Blue looks good on you, enjoy your verified checkmark” pop-up when users sign up to Blue, but without the actual opt-in for displaying a “verified” label on your profile, although we have an idea about what that will look like thanks to Jane Manchun Wong.

It’s still not clear when verification through Twitter Blue will go live (or when it will arrive on Android), but it seems like it’s happening soon. Musk initially gave the developers working on Blue until Monday, November 7th, to complete these changes or else face getting fired.

Screenshot: The Verge

It looks like verification will be the only feature available with the Twitter Blue subscription to start. Other perks, like fewer ads, the ability to post longer videos, and priority ranking to help “lower the visibility of scams, spam, and bots,” are listed as “coming soon.” Twitter Blue is only available in the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the UK for now.

When Musk announced the new Twitter Blue subscription last week, he hinted at providing access to paywalled articles, but this feature isn’t among those listed in the update. He also pulled the ad-free article perk that came with the previous $4.99 / month Twitter Blue subscription and reportedly pushed to make Twitter’s “edit” button available to all users, not just subscribers. On Friday, Musk laid off around half of Twitter’s employees across several departments, including product trust and safety, policy, communications, tweet curation, ethical AI, and others.

Update 3:08PM ET: Updated to add information from a product manager at Twitter.

Apple’s reportedly building an advertising network around its Major League Soccer deal

https://dallasnewsjournal.com/apples-reportedly-building-an-advertising-network-around-its-major-league-soccer-deal/

Apple’s building an advertising network as part of its deal to start streaming Major League Soccer (MLS) games next year, according to a report from Bloomberg. Sources familiar with the situation told the outlet that Apple’s in talks with advertisers and MLS sponsors to display ads during soccer games and “related shows.”

Apple struck a 10-year deal with the MLS in June and will start streaming soccer games through its Apple TV app in February 2023. While the company plans on introducing a separate, Sunday Ticket-like subscription dedicated to streaming every MLS game, it says it’ll make a “broad selection” of MLS and Leagues Cup matches available to Apple TV Plus subscribers, with a “limited number” available for free.

There still isn’t any pricing information about the standalone subscription just yet, but, as noted by Bloomberg, Apple plans on including ads for all MLS viewers, including season pass holders, Apple TV Plus subscribers, and those watching for free. This expands on the commercials Apple already slips into its Friday Night Baseball games, and marks a continued push into advertising.

In August, Bloomberg reported that Apple’s advertising business rakes in about $4 billion in revenue annually, and that the company wants to get this number into the double digits. One solution the company’s reportedly considering is placing ads in other areas on the iPhone, such as in the Maps, Podcasts, and Books apps.

It already brought more ads to the App Store, which now appear in the Today tab and “You Might Also Like” sections beneath app listings. The move drew criticism from developers, who quickly noticed ads for gambling apps appearing on App Store product pages. Apple has since paused App Store ads related to gambling and “a few other categories,” but hasn’t come forward with a plan to address this issue just yet.

Sony’s all-around excellent WF-1000XM4 earbuds are on sale for $100 off

https://dallasnewsjournal.com/sonys-all-around-excellent-wf-1000xm4-earbuds-are-on-sale-for-100-off/

There’s no telling what another day might bring — especially if you too are glued to our coverage of a certain social media hellscape — but you can rest assured that The Verge’s deals team is always on the lookout for ways to help you save, both in the form of early Black Friday deals or whatever we can scrounge up for you on a random Saturday.

And we’ve got some bangers for you this week because Sony’s WF-1000XM4 earbuds are on sale for an all-time low of around $178 at Amazon and Target until tomorrow. That’s around $100 off their regular price of $278, and much better than the typical $30 discount we see.

The WF-1000XM4 frequently come up when we’re talking earbuds, namely because they’re just that good. The excellent all-rounders offer terrific sound quality, lengthy battery life, and some of the best noise cancellation you can get in a pair of wireless earbuds. They’ve remained our top pick for the best earbuds you can buy since their debut because of this, even if the Bose QuietComfort Earbuds II recently edged them out in the ANC department. Read our review.

$178

Sony’s WF-1000XM4 have some of the best noise cancellation of any true wireless earbuds, and the sound quality is second to none. The earbuds can also now be charged wirelessly and have a new design that’s smaller and rated IPX4.

There may be a new M2-powered iPad Pro available, but I’m here to tell you, “no.” No, you should not pay $1,199 for the 12.9-inch configuration of the iPad Pro. Instead, the savvy move would be to pick up a last-gen iPad Pro with Apple’s M1 CPU while it’s still available.

Fortunately, Amazon is selling the 12.9-inch M1 iPad Pro from 2021 with Wi-Fi and 128GB of storage for just $899.99 ($200 off). That’s as low a price as you’ll find on this very capable tablet, which offers a beautiful Mini LED screen and just about everything the newer model does, save for some small stuff like the second-gen Apple Pencil’s new “hover” mode. Simply put, the M2 model doesn’t do a whole lot more to justify its higher price tag.

With the M1 iPad Pro, you get the same Apple Pencil compatibility (sans hover), great battery life, Face ID, and — once again, because it bears repeating — that awesome 12.9-inch display. If you want a spacious iPad for doing laptop-like things, this is the one to get. Read our review.

Oh. And if you really do want the latest iPad Pro, you can currently get the 11-inch base version with Apple’s M2 chip at Amazon for $749 ($50 off) — we’ll concede that much.

$899.99

Apple’s latest iPad Pro comes with the company’s own M1 processor and Thunderbolt. However, the 12.9-inch model also touts the best display of any tablet available.

Bet you can’t tell if this is an M1 iPad Pro or an M2 iPad Pro. Don’t worry, nobody can.

Here’s a unique deal just for our lovely Verge readers: Wellbots is knocking $150 off the Segway Ninebot KickScooter Max when you use promo code VERGEMAX at checkout (Pro-tip: if you subscribe to our Verge Deals newsletter, you would have already had this deal delivered to your inbox — wink-wink, nudge-nudge).

This promo drops the price of the 350W electric scooter from $899 to $749. Now, full disclosure, we have seen the KickScooter Max on sale for less before, but that was before Segway increased the price mere months into the pandemic. The current deal is just $50 shy of its all-time low, and definitely helps soften the blow of its inflated sticker price.

In terms of specs, the KickScooter Max can go up to 40 miles on a single charge, with a top speed of 18.6 mph. It also folds down for easier storage, so it’s great for short trips around a city or on a small commute. Just be careful out there if you’re surrounded by aggressive cagers.

$749

Normally $899, Wellbots is currently offering Verge readers a $150 discount on Segway’s electric scooter with a 40-mile range. You can get it right now for $749 when you use offer code THEVERGEMAX at checkout.

In case you missed it, a bunch of Amazon devices are currently on sale in celebration of Alexa’s birthday (because in addition to gendering the robots, we must apparently commemorate their “births”). These discounts apply to the Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K Max, which is on sale for just $39.99 at Amazon, Target, and Best Buy. That’s $15 off one of the best streaming devices you can get, one that supports HDR for better color and contrast as well as Wi-Fi 6, ensuring a more reliable connection with less risk of buffering.

You can spend a lot more to get a better streaming device, like the latest Apple TV 4K, but it’s hard to beat the Max in terms of value at this price point. Just remember that while Amazon supports a wide variety of apps, it loves nothing more than feeding you ads for Amazon Prime shows on its dashboard. Read our review.

$39.99

Amazon’s latest streaming stick offers improved performance and support for Wi-Fi 6. It continues to offer a terrific selection of streaming apps and an easy-to-use interface with the benefit of Alexa voice commands.

If you play games on PlayStation or Xbox consoles, you can grab some nice discounts on gift cards for either the PlayStation Store or the Xbox storefront. Right now, Eneba is offering a $100 PlayStation Store digital gift card for $82.44 (about $18 off) when you use code PSNWknd at checkout, as well as a $100 Xbox gift card for $77.67 (about $22 off) with offer code XboxWknd. Both of these deals are good through November 7th at 7AM ET.

These gift cards are delivered digitally, and they make for an excellent value if you have a console without a disc drive or simply prefer digital media — especially since the digital versions of most games don’t go on sale as frequently as the physical ones.
