NEW EPISODE: BALLYHOO! on The Austin Young Show

Howi Spangler joins the show to talk about Ballyhoo!’s new album, Bad Summer, and why the band decided to lean harder into its pop-punk and rock side this time around.

He talks about working with pop punk legend John Feldmann, recording at Sonic Ranch in Texas, the stories behind “The Alchemist” and “Blood Money,” and the lawsuit that nearly killed the band. Howi also opens up about rebuilding from the ground up, touring in a van, and realizing that music written in a Maryland basement can reach people on the other side of the world.

It’s a conversation about making music, surviving the music business, and sticking with it when things get ugly.

🎺 SKA FACTS: THE IMPOSSIBLES

• Formed in Austin, Texas, in 1994.

• No horn section needed. They mixed ska-punk with ’90s alternative rock.

• Broke up in 1998 so the members could go to college. 🤘

• Reunited in 2000 with a more indie rock sound.

• Their 1999 release Anthology ’94–’98 collected their early material.

Real life: undefeated, even against ska-punk bands.

NO HORNS, NO SKA. PERIOD. 🎺

Nick from Pure Genius Ska has drawn a line in the sand, and apparently, loving a band doesn’t automatically make it ska.

No horns? Not ska. Catbite? Also not ska. According to Nick, anyway.

Now we have to ask: Is a horn section mandatory for ska, or is Nick about to start a fight with half the scene?

Turns out Pure Genius Ska wasn’t just a ska band. It was basically the UTA tuba section with guitars, horns, and a questionable amount of free time.

Nick and Josh told me that nearly everyone in the band came out of the University of Texas at Arlington’s tuba studio. Which raises an important question: how did we get from a bunch of tuba players to a DFW third wave ska band?

Pure Genius Ska is back, and apparently the ska arguments never went away.

Nick and Josh join The Austin Young Show to talk about the band’s DFW ska roots, getting back together after years away, the new four-track EP in the works, and why one of them thinks skanking looks ridiculous. There’s also a fairly strong opinion about horns and what actually counts as ska.

SKA HISTORY YOU PROBABLY DIDN’T KNOW

• Mobtown formed in Los Angeles in 1991 and specialized in reviving traditional late-1950s ska.

• Their first official ska show was February 29, 1992, at Fender’s Ballroom in Long Beach. Yes, they debuted on Leap Day.

• Their debut album, The Rhythm of Ska, came out in 1996 and featured 13 tracks.

• Mobtown released Cactus Juice through legendary ska label Moon Ska Records in 1998.

• The band was a nine-piece lineup featuring vocals, guitar, bass, drums, percussion, trumpets, trombone, tenor saxophone and baritone saxophone.

Apparently, Tomorrow Fades Away is the pop-punk band moms approve of. They've had fans' mothers come up after shows in Garland saying they love their music. It's a weird compliment for a skate-punk band, but hey, if it gets you gigs. The band talks about their evolution and playing DIY shows.

Don't let anyone tell you it's not worth your time. If you're into punk for the money, you're missing the point entirely. Tomorrow Fades Away started their band at 39, realizing they'd missed years by listening to others. The message is simple: just do it.
