Opening up channels for

The importance of good employer/employee communication has never been so obvious as it is right now, as we continue to navigate the pandemic, not to mention the Great Resignation.

Employees are looking for companies that foster effective feedback, openness, transparency, and flatter hierarchy.

It’s more than just sending out occasional “How are we doing?” surveys and conducting all-hands meetings. Employers have to create what Deloitte calls “listening channels” that give and get insight into sentiments, needs, opinions, experiences, and outcomes of employees.

At Deloitte, in fact, when it came time to figure out the return-to-work policies after stay-at-home orders were lifted last year, the company involved all of its employees in a series of “huddles,” some of which took place in live meetings, and others in asynchronous chat format on a social platform. By paying attention to what people were saying, leadership at Deloitte could design the return-to-work policies around the experiences and desires of real employees.

This sort of approach to open communication works in a lot of situations, not just pandemic moments. The candidates I work with at infinity CXC are not alone in seeking out employers that value their input.

If you had to name one character trait indispensable to human leadership in the past year, what would it be?
Some might argue: resilience.

Kevin Sowers, president of Johns Hopkins Health System, puts it concisely: “Resilience … is about how we acknowledge, respond to, and rise above chaos, and how we act on the other side of that disruption.”

So as a leader, how can you amp up your level of resilience on purpose in order to better lead your teams?

By looking for the value in the experience. Taking the time to pinpoint how your organization may have changed in the last year can inform the decisions you make this year.

Resilience, resilience, resilience. For so many of the leaders I work with in my role at infinity CXC, it’s become the mantra of the times.

When life throws dung at you, use it as manure.

It’s been a rough and tough year. It has been a year to either comply or challenge the times. Very few would choose going bold - to go where common sense would cringe.

Pleased to inform that infinity CXC has chosen to create its own path. We have tripled the size of our team in the last 3 months ! And we’ve just begun ... High on anticipation for 2021.

“To handle yourself, use your head; to handle others, use your heart.”

Eleanor Roosevelt said many things well, but this is one of my favorite Eleanorisms. And so apt for these times.

Leadership is not always about making smarter decisions. Empathy is an important aspect of leadership, too. This “soft skill,” as they call it, can’t necessarily be measured or tested, but you know it when you see it.

If there’s one thing most of us have learned in 2020, it’s resilience. Time and again I hear from my clients at infinity CXC how stressful it’s been—and how surprised they are at how they and their employees have weathered the stress.

But resilience shouldn’t have to be forced upon us. Experts say that we can actually train our brains to be more resilient in advance of adverse circumstances.

When we’re in a stressful or shocking situation, the part of our brain called the amygdala automatically takes over. That’s the area responsible for the fight-or-flight response.

So what’s the magical mindfulness exercise? It’s simple. Find a quiet place, take a comfortable seat, close your eyes and simply breathe. Many Apps out there can help too.

Congrats to Linda Rendle on becoming the first female CEO of The Company. Rendle climbed the ladder at Clorox from her first role as Senior Sales Analyst over 17 years ago. Start small and you can make it big too.

A master pencil artisan was finishing up his masterpiece: the best pencil he had ever crafted. As he gave it a final polish, he said:

“Pencil, I have 5 pieces of advice.

✅ You’ll do great things, but only if you let someone else hold you.

✅ Sharpening is going to be very painful, but you must endure it to be your best self.

✅ You have an eraser, so you can correct your mistakes, but some are harder to erase than others.

✅ You may look like a simple piece of wood. But remember, it’s what is inside you that counts.

✅ No matter the surface, you must leave your mark. Keep writing even when it gets rough.”

I love this allegory of being committed to one’s work.

Love or hate Google, you can’t argue the company has done an excellent job of growing. It’s also a very people-centric company in a lot of ways.

Google surveys its employees regularly to find out how managers are doing. There are three buckets of information they probe:

✅ How well managers nurture growth in others
✅ Their level of operating excellence
✅ Emotional intelligence

By paying attention to the responses over time, Google can identify which managers are doing a great job and deserve accolades and promotions.

“What do you love doing so much that the words failure and success essentially become irrelevant?”

That thing—the thing you love beyond success versus failure—is what should be driving your career.

Of course, most successful people are obviously driven at least in part by the idea of succeeding at whatever they take on. But to truly thrive, you have to respect failure, too, and consider it an interesting learning experience.

Jeff Gothelf, an award-winning author and coach, wrote a book called Forever Employable that puts forth 5 key concepts to embrace when considering a career pivot:
✅ Adapt a spirit of entrepreneurialism
✅ Practice self-confidence about sharing your experience to date
✅ Embrace continuous learning
✅ Constantly improve at everything you do
✅ Don’t shy away from reinvention

Companies are not afraid to re-org and reinvent themselves. You should not be, either!

If you’re sending emails at 11 p.m., you’re sending a signal to your team that working from home means being “always on.” How can you make more thoughtful decisions about leadership in a work-from-home scenario?
