Cooper's breakthrough came with his independent debut single "The Pentecostal Poppa" in 1997 (or 1998 per some accounts), which achieved notable radio success and rotation on BET, drawing the attention of industry executive Andre Harrell and leading to a signing with Jive Records. In 2000, he released his major-label debut album Universal Concussion, featuring singles like "Don't Be Mad (Who Da' Blame)" and "Hot Ta' Def / I Told You So," which was promoted through national tours, music videos, and guest appearances on tracks by artists such as Hezekiah Walker and Mary Mary.
