BB Jay (born Jarvis Edward Cooper) is an American rapper from Brooklyn, New York, widely recognized as a pioneer in the holy hip hop genre. Active since 1996, his career blends East Coast hip hop influences with explicit Christian themes, emphasizing faith, mentorship, and gospel messaging through music and multimedia ventures like GODkoreTV. Cooper's breakthrough came with his independent debut single "The Pentecostal Poppa" in 1997 (or 1998 per some accounts), which achieved notable radio success and rotation on BET, drawing the attention of industry executive Andre Harrell and leading to a signing with Jive Records. In 2000, he released his major-label debut album Universal Concussion, featuring singles like "Don't Be Mad (Who Da' Blame)" and "Hot Ta' Def / I Told You So," which was promoted through national tours, music videos, and guest appearances on tracks by artists such as Hezekiah Walker and Mary Mary.
Following a period of hiatus, BB Jay shifted focus toward ministry and collaboration, forming the group 3 The God Way with rappers Pettidee and Demetrus, whose self-titled album dropped in 2005 on Kaught Upp Entertainment. He independently released the 17-track album Unlimited in 2007 via his Jizfat Global Music label, accompanied by a companion DVD, and earned accolades including the 2002 Holy Hip Hop Award, a Stellar Award nomination for New Artist of the Year, and the 2007 National Hip Hop Apostle of the Year at the Carolina Holy Hip Hop Achievement Awards. In 2023, he was honored as a "Legend in Hip Hop" alongside EMCEE N.I.C.E. and Canton Jones, underscoring his enduring impact on Christian hip hop and broader cultural discussions around faith in music.
