OPINION: Is the UDP Executive Failing Its Supporters or Divided Over Flag Bearer Issue?
By Seedy B Kanyi
The United Democratic Party (UDP) stands today at a critical juncture. What should be an exciting and democratic process the selection of the party’s flag bearer has instead turned into a source of division and bitterness among its supporters. On social media, loyalists who should be working together to strengthen the UDP are instead bullying and insulting one another over who deserves to lead.
This is troubling, because the rules of the party are clear. Every member of the UDP has the right to apply to become flag bearer. It is meant to be an open and democratic contest. Yet, instead of respecting the process, many supporters have abandoned civility and are pushing personal agendas, risking the unity of the very party they claim to defend.
The silence of the UDP executive on this matter is equally worrying. When nine elected Members of Parliament were expelled, the leadership did not hesitate to act, sacrificing valuable representatives who had weight and influence within the party. But today, when the party’s grassroots are tearing each other apart, no strong intervention has been made.
This raises serious questions, are the UDP executives themselves divided on the issue of the flag bearer? Is this why they are reluctant to take decisive action to calm tensions and guide the process? If unity at the top is missing, then it is no surprise that the base is left confused and fractured.
The UDP cannot afford to go into another election cycle with such disunity. The party’s strength lies in its ability to present itself as a credible alternative to the Gambian people. But how can it do so if its own supporters are fighting in the open, unchecked by the leadership?
The executives must rise to the occasion. Silence in the face of division is not leadership it is avoidance. If the UDP is serious about governance, then it must first govern itself.
