DEEP ELLUM STREETS NOW CLOSING AT 10PM ON WEEKENDS… HERE’S WHAT TO KNOW!

After a recent surge in late-night violence, including a tragic shooting on July 5th, the City of Dallas is moving forward with new safety measures in Deep Ellum. Starting this weekend, Deep Ellum streets will be blocked off to cars and will be pedestrian-only past 10 pm on Fridays and Saturdays, and that policy is set to remain in place indefinitely.

WHAT’S CHANGING
While restaurants and bars can remain open until midnight (for now), access to the neighborhood’s streets by car will be cut off at 10 pm to help limit crowd size and support DPD’s ability to manage late-night safety. It’s not a full curfew, but it’s part of a broader effort to regain control of the area following multiple violent incidents this summer.

MIDNIGHT CURFEW STILL UNDER DISCUSSION
While businesses can technically stay open past 10pm, some landlords are already pushing new lease requirements for bars to close at midnight, and city leaders are floating the idea of requiring special use permits for any business that wants to operate later. There’s nothing official yet, but if approved, this could majorly impact Deep Ellum’s nightlife scene.

WHY THIS MATTERS
For many of us, Deep Ellum holds memories of late-night concerts, bar-hopping with friends, and feeling safe while walking from one spot to the next. It’s always had a gritty charm, but also so full of creativity! Now, business owners and city officials are trying to strike a balance between keeping people safe and preserving the energy that’s made Deep Ellum a cornerstone in Dallas for decades!

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT
City Council has a 30-day window to develop a formal plan, but for now, the 10pm street closures are in effect and will continue each weekend. Owners, patrons, and local leaders are urging city officials to include them in the next steps and to ensure any changes support both safety and small businesses.

Stay tuned as this story develops!
