IS THE BELMONT HOTEL FINALLY MAKING A RETURN??

Once a center for culture in the city from vibrant pool parties to Leon Bridges singing in the lobby to Bloody Mary sipping at their resident restaurant, Smoke, the was a staple part of Dallas, and its history.

But in the last five years that it’s been closed, it’s faded into a distant memory, or to many new or young Dallasites, it may have no meaning at all. BUT now the iconic motor hotel may be finally getting its rebirth!

A 1940’S MOTOR COURT
The Belmont Hotel opened in 1946 at Sylvan and Fort Worth Aves in West Dallas. In the 2000’s, it was restored into what many of us knew it as: a cool, retro motor court destination for drinks, music, art, great food, awesome vibes and of course hotel rooms too. Think Austin Motel or the El Rey.

BUT THEN THE SHUTTER
COVID shut the hotel down and an attempt to reopen was further pushed by the 2021 Winter Storm. So now it’s overgrown, damaged and needs an estimated $130 million restoration and renovation.

NEW NEWS FOR ITS REVIVAL
This summer, the talked with the owner Jordan Ford on the new plans for restoration, rezoning and getting a historic landmark designation. The latest designs include moving the entrance and the pool, adding a patio to the restaurant space, building a penthouse, adding a parking lot and building apartment units.

BUT A LONG WAYS OFF
Just given the magnitude of everything needed, it sounds like that’s still a ways off. So no date is set for when construction would begin or we’d ever begin to step onto the lot again.

FINGERS CROSSED FOR ONE DAY
Whether or not we agree with the new plans, we really just want the Belmont back. It was such a special place and it breaks our hearts to drive past it rotting up on that hill, not able to open its doors to its magnificent history and architecture.

If you too loved the Belmont and are interested in its revival, we recommend reading the full article that dives into all of the intricacies and details!
