Seated in the middle is National Resistance Army (NRA) rebel leader Yoweri Museveni. Standing directly behind him is one of the NRA rebel intelligence officers Paul Kagame.

The lady on the left is Gertrude Njuba, now a veteran politician and former confidant of Museveni. The lady on the right is Joy Mirembe, one of the most senior female commanders during the NRA war. She never made it out of the bush. She died and was buried in the bush during the war that brought Museveni to power.

The photo was taken around 1983. Three years later, in 1986, the rebels captured power with Museveni as their leader becoming president. Last week, on January 26, they celebrated 39 years in power.

Ruto, Raila ride in same vehicle on way to AU summit
President William Ruto and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga used the same vehicle on their way to the African Union summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

In a video seen by the Star, Ruto is seen leaving a building with Raila and senior government officials including Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi seemingly heading to the 38th Ordinary Summit of Heads of State and Government of the African Union.

Ruto then ushers Raila to a waiting Audi car outside and the former Prime Minister goes on to occupy the back left seat

Raila is seeking to succeed Moussa Faki as the AUC chairperson in elections set for February 15.

Raila is facing Djibouti’s Foreign Affairs Minister Mahamoud Ali Youssouf, and Madagascar’s former Foreign Affairs Minister Richard Randriamandrato in the elections.

Prior to the D-Day, Ruto held meetings with presidents and heads of states on the sidelines of the summit.

Ruto also met the outgoing chair in last-minute campaigns for Raila.

He held discussions with presidents Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo (Equatorial Guinea), Bassirou Diomaye Faye (Senegal), João Lourenço (Angola), Ethiopia Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali and Barbados Barbados Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley.

The chairperson is elected by member states, excluding countries under military rule.

A candidate must garner a two-thirds majority of the votes cast. An AUC chairperson is elected by the Assembly for a four-year term, renewable once.

The seat is held on a rotational basis among the five regions, and this time, the Eastern region is eligible to present a candidate while the Northern region is supposed to present a deputy chairperson.

The new AU chairman will be faced with the enormous task of tackling Africa’s problems ranging from high poverty levels, runaway debt, insecurity, illiteracy and poor health services among others.

A staunch advocate for Pan-Africanism, Raila has outlined an ambitious vision for the continent.

He has pledged to accelerate Africa's development and enhance the continent’s self-reliance, unity, and sustainability.

He envisions an Africa that rises above its historical challenges, realising its full potential through a new era of progressive leadership.

‘I won’t be bullied by Musk or Trump’: Malema

Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema has defiantly stated that he will not be intimidated by Elon Musk or US President Donald Trump. This comes after Malema was falsely labeled an “international criminal” over baseless claims of land grabs in South Africa.

Addressing congregants at the St. Paul African Apostolic Church in Soweto, Johannesburg, on Sunday, Malema remained resolute, standing firm against what he described as unfounded accusations and external pressure.

Malema says, “Why do you make me an international criminal for asking for the dignity of black people, I have not committed any crime against anyone except to say let’s restore the dignity of black person, if you don’t have the land, you will never have dignity.”

Malema also addresses the unfolding situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), which saw South Africa lose 14 of its soldiers.

The EFF leader has reiterated his call for the withdrawal of the SANDF. “We are not refusing our soldiers to go to DRC, we are simply saying withdraw them because we are not ready to go anywhere, once we have prepared ourselves enough, we can go to DRC”

In an apparent swipe at former EFF members, Malema has also stated that he will never be broken by that which did not build him.

“I lost my brothers now, who turned against me and I never looked back. I’ve never, not even once doubted myself when my brothers turned against me. It is not the first time that the brothers turn against each other. It is there in the Bible it doesn’t start with them. So, why should I be a crybaby when they turn against me.”

Malema, however, could not be drawn on Ndlozi’s revelations of an intelligence report on the alleged infiltration of the MK in the EFF as well as Ndlozi’s absence from the party’s conference being attributed to his suspension.
