As someone who works closely with the Turtle Creek Association, I’ve had the unique privilege of not only witnessing but feeling the impact of giving in real time. From early morning walks with my dog Bagel—who never wants to leave his favorite stretch of the creek—to the countless conversations with residents, donors, and neighbors, I’m reminded again and again that this community thrives because people care deeply and give generously.
Walking down the tree-lined paths, I’ve met longtime supporters who light up when they talk about the transformation they’ve seen over the years—how cleaner water, brighter medians, and thoughtful landscaping have brought new life to our beloved corridor. One of the most exciting recent projects, The Bridges of Turtle Creek, was inspired by community conversations and is now a shining example of what happens when people come together to protect a piece of their city’s soul.
I’ve helped organize events like the Azalea Luncheon, where sponsors stepped up to support rose bush plantings that now bloom vibrantly across all 25 medians. I’ve spoken with neighbors who fondly remember the "before" and are now in awe of the “after”—grateful for the shade of the new Chinese Lace Elm at Fitzhugh or the burst of color from drift roses and crepe myrtles.
And behind all of it are people—donors who see their contributions not as charity, but as civic pride in action. Members who don’t just give money, but share stories, lend their time, and rally their friends to join the cause. That’s the spirit of Turtle Creek, and to me, that’s the spirit of America.
Because giving isn’t just something we do—it’s something we live. It’s in the early morning walkers who pick up trash as they go. It’s in every rose bush, every rebuilt bridge, every friendly wave from a jogger or neighbor along the trail.
Giving is American. And thanks to that spirit, Turtle Creek is more than just a place—it’s a shared promise that beauty, community, and nature are always worth investing in.
