During Black History Month, our students have been learning about influential black artists who have made an impact in the music industry. An artist one of our students chose to highlight is Ray Charles.

Ray Charles was born on September 23rd, 1930. He was born in Albany, Georgia but raised in Greenville, Florida. At five years old, he began playing the piano and a year later a 6, he contracted glaucoma. Glaucoma is a type of eye condition that damages the optic nerve, which is needed to have good vision. It is caused because of an abnormally high amount of pressure in the eye and is one of the leading causes of blindness in adults over the age of 60. He began studying writing music in braille and learned how to play various instruments at the St. Augustine School for the Deaf and Blind. His father passed away when he was 10 years old, and his mom passed only 5 years later. In 1949, Charles released his first single “Confession Blues” which did well on the R&B charts, along with all his other songs. He was seen as a pioneer of soul music with his integration of R&B, gospel, pop, and country music. Ray Charles was nominated for 37 Grammys and won 17. He was also awarded with the Recording Academy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1987, with 10 of his songs being inducted into the GRAMMY Hall of Fame. A quote from Ray Charles said, "I never wanted to be famous. I only wanted to be great." Charles passed away on June 10th, 2004 in Beverly Hills, California.

Our last artist of Black History Month is Ella Mai! She was raised in London, then moved to New York at 12 years old and then moved back to England after her high school graduation. She competed on The X Factor with the group Arize while attending music school, but the group didn't pass the initial audition and later split up. Mai did end up seeing success as a soloist, though, when DJ Mustard caught wind of her music on SoundCloud and Instagram, and signed her in 2016. She made her debut in February of that same year, which included the song "She Don't." She followed up with more EPs, "Change" and "Ready," which was the home of perhaps her biggest hit "Boo'd Up." The song was nominated for several Grammy awards and won for Best R&B Song in 2019. She has remained relatively quiet, but her latest release in 2020 is "Not Another Love Song," and so far, Mai has shown how big of a career she could have. Sammy Davis Jr. is today's featured artist! He was born in 1925 in New York, initially raised by his grandmother and then later by his father at the age of 3. His father was in a dance troupe, so Davis went along with them whenever they child and spent a good portion of his childhood on the road. At the same age of 3, he learned to tap dance and began performing with his father and uncle as the Will Mastin Trio. During their travels in the 30s, he also picked up singing, instrument, and even comedy skills, deeming him the star of their shows. He made his first film appearance in 1933 in the short "Rufus Jones for President." He had to put his career on hold when he was drafted into the World War II in 1943, where he experienced racial harassment and abuse by white soldiers, something he had previously been protected from by his father. He found refuge in the entertainment regiment, though, and as soon ash he was done with the war, he returned to showbiz. He put out his first albums "Starring Sammy Davis Jr." and "Sammy Davis Jr. Sings Just for Lovers" in 1955, both of which received critical acclaim and commercial success. He made more appearances in film and TV with this success, appearing in "Anna Lucasta" in 1958 and "The Frank Sinatra Show" that same year. He was also very involved in the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s, marching and refusing to play in racially segregated clubs. He also decided to make a point by marrying Swedish actress May Britt when in*******al marriage was still banned in 31 states. As time went on, he continued to see success in all areas of entertainment until his death in 1990. For more information on him, visit https://www.biography.com/performer/sammy-davis-jr.
