Spent the last two days in Kingsland, Texas, at the confluence of the Llano and Colorado rivers. The Llano rose about 4 or 5 feet last night and has receded this morning, leaving debris on the riverside. We’re about 90 miles northwest of the tragic flooding in Kerrville. Heading home soon.

My office today: interviewing Kevin Moriarity, Exec. Director, Dallas Theater Center, telling the story of "Mr. Culture," John Rosenfield, arts columnist/critic for the Dallas Morning News from the 1920's to the mid-60's, part of the story for my documentary The Blue House, which was and remains a lovely Queen Anne Victorian home in the Cedars neighborhood of Dallas. John's father, Max Rosenfield, built The Blue House in 1886. In 1955 his son stood on this spot with world-renown architect Frank Lloyd Wright and invited him to build a theatre here, above a limestone escarpment on Turtle Creek. The Dallas Theater Center is the only theater that Frank Lloyd Wright saw built in his lifetime. Thank you everyone who turned out on a blustery Sunday to learn about the history of The Blue House, the last Queen Anne Victorian home in the Cedars neighborhood. The house, almost 140 years old, was about to be demolished and was rescued by neighbors who wanted it saved. On Sunday we celebrated its rebirth, restored by Mark Martinek and Jay Baker, two Cedars residents.

During the event organized by Preservation Dallas and Dallas Jewish Historical Society, I screened an excerpt from my work-in-progress documentary about this remarkable home and the man who build it in 1885, Max Rosenfield. Among the attendees was Alex Ray, Max's great-grandson.

Life With a Camera

My life with a camera began in summer camp in the Maryland mountains. My cameras have led me around the world, put me face to face with extraordinary people, heroes and villains struggling against the odds to leave a mark, a legacy. All I’ve ever wanted to do was to tell their stories, in their own words.

Everyone has a story to tell. I’ve found those stories on a jungle riverbank, in the halls of the Vatican, in concentration camps, in classrooms, on an Alaskan glacier, in hundreds of living rooms and kitchens and offices, wherever my camera has taken me.

I’ve asked questions and listened carefully. And then, alone in the editing room, I’ve fashioned these stories that show us ourselves, the secrets about how we live. And what I’ve learned is that, in a world of infinite differences, we are all pretty much the same.
