Such a great explanation of how and why the sun loves me so much 🫠
Down south, the sun is starting to make its case for spring, folks. And if you know someone w Lupus, you know we are basically hiding in dark, cold corners of our home. So what exactly does heat and sun do to a Lupus body as we move into Spring and Summer? Here’s some of the science: In patients with lupus, sun/UV exposure and heat can trigger symptom flares.
👉🏻UV Damage: Ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun damage skin cells and their DNA, in a process known as apoptosis.
🤦🏻♀️Impaired Clearance: In healthy individuals, the immune system efficiently clears away these damaged or dead cells. However, in people with lupus, this process is slow and impaired.
👉🏻Immune System Overreaction: The lingering dead cells, along with their altered contents (including DNA fragments), can be misinterpreted by the lupus immune system as foreign invaders.
💀Autoimmune Attack: This triggers an autoimmune response, where the body’s own immune system attacks healthy cells and tissues, leading to inflammation and lupus symptoms.
👉🏻 it’s important to remember, not just the sun, but also fluorescent and other types of lights give off UV rays and can also trigger symptoms as well.
When it comes to heat: Heat can potentially exacerbate existing inflammation in the body, which is a hallmark of lupus.
Stay safe! Stay inside when possible during these hot months, and rest more if you’re body feels like it is struggling more than normal 💜
