It is with an extremely heavy 💔 that we share in the passing of Project K-9 Hero Pack Member #339, K-9 Anik, retired from the Chattanooga Police Department.
Over this past week, Anik was at the Veterinary Care and Specialty Group to remove a large mass on his lungs. Post surgery complications with air getting into his lungs brought on a Sepsis condition. Despite us paying over $15,272.04 on Thanksgiving Day, unfortunately there was nothing the team of Surgeons, his Handler, or we at PK9H could do to save this Hero. All of our hearts are completely broken over the loss of K-9 Anik.
K-9 Anik was a 12-year-old German Shepherd, that served his community for 10 years specializing in conducting narcotics detection, suspect apprehension, handler protection, building searches, area searches, and tracking suspects.
During his career, K-9 Anik assisted the DEA, TBI, Homeland Security, ATF, FBI, US Marshals Service, Tennessee Highway Patrol, Collegedale Police Department, Hamilton County Sheriff's Office, and the East Ridge Police Department with felony level investigations.
K-9 Anik also assisted with numerous CPD Investigations units, such as Robbery, Narcotics, SVU, Major Crimes, and Fugitive Unit. K-9 Anik assisted on countless arrest warrants and search warrants with CPD’s SWAT Team. K-9 Anik is also credited with saving his first Handler’s life during a traffic stop, where the violator became aggressive towards his Handler.
A struggle ensued, and K-9 Anik was deployed from the patrol car’s “door popper,” and engaged the suspect, making it possible for his handler to effectively place the suspect in handcuffs.
K-9 Anik also located a suspect after tracking for 1.5 miles, where the violator tried to pull a firearm out of his coat. K-9 Anik knocked the firearm out of the suspect's hand and pulled the suspect to the ground where officers took him into custody.
In 2022, K-9 Anik earned the honor of “Dual Purpose” Top Dog at the United States Police Canine Association, (USPCA) Region 22 Fall Trials. K-9 Anik also took part in the 2022 USPCA Nationals Patrol/Narcotics Trials, earning 1st place in Agility.
K-9 Anik was also on scene as part of the response team to the July 16th, 2015 terrorist attack at the Naval Operations Support Center in Chattanooga. During his service he assisted in the recovery of over 50 fi****ms, and seizure of over than 2800 pounds of illegal street narcotics.
Please take a moment to remember K-9 Anik today and keep his family and his Handler in your thoughts. It was an immense honor to serve Anik, as he spent four years in the same unit as our recently passed National Ambassador, K-9 Yoube! We at Project K-9 Hero will ensure that he is ! -
