Halfblood Productions The Halfblood Company Book One: Fog of Ravens

Coming Soon

Been a while hasn't it? Life has been pretty busy as of late, but we're still making good progress.

Act 1, part 1, whatever you want to call it was nearly finished but not anymore. I decided due to add some extra chapters that I didn't originally plan for. Chapters that don't necessarily move the story forward, but that I still think are important for character development.

The real question is, are they important enough to get past the editor?

Toga, the halfling blood hunter. This character has earned MVP status several times through out the campaign. If you need a monster dead and skinned, look no further.
1) Toga is usually undeterred by most stressful situations. She goes with the flow until it's time to go to work (stab everything). The hair is a bit over the top on this one.
2) Very slick ninja vibes from this one. Doesn't quite come across as halfling though.
3) "Oh boy, here I go killing again." Too much Disney princess vibes.
4) I'm digging the look on this one. Behind the innocent façade lies a sleeping killer that's ready to strike.
5) Bad ass? Yes. Indifferent stealth killer? Not really.

So at this point I'm nearly done writing act 1 of the book. My goal in this first section is two fold. 1. Set the world stage for the rest of the book and 2. Start planting the seeds for character growth.

Without giving away too much of the plot, things go from 0-100 real quick. The scope and scale of what the heroes get involved changes drastically from start to finish.

My aim is to make sure the foundation is properly set so that when that major shift does happen, you as the reader will have an idea of how the characters will act and how the world around them will be affected.

Pinky's Animal Transformations:

The most iconic ability of a Druid is their talents of transformation. My inspiration for these designs comes from the classic Disney film "The Sword in the Stone," more specifically the scene where Merlin is battling Madame Mim. I loved how the animals that they morphed into shared some physical traits with their human form. Which is the reason theses animals possess hats and glasses. These are just a few of Pinky's various forms.

1) The bear is a personal favorite. The hat and glasses work nicely with this design.
2) The winged sideburns on the hawk fit. Don't ask me how the hat and glasses stay on while he flies.
3) I hate how the hat fits on the wolf. The shape of a wolfs skull is not ideal for hats.
4) A rat might be the perfect animal for stealth missions, but he might have to leave the hat at home.

Creating a character in D&D is one of the best parts of the game. The freedom to choose on who and how you want to play is a big reason why this game has withstand the test of time. When I create a character this is what I keep in mind:
A) Has attributes that will help my group. Example: A tank, healer, range fighter
B) Interesting to play as. If the character is perfect in every way than that can get stale real fast. The solution is to give him flaws that give you obstacles to work around. For instance, Luka is unable to lie. This simple quirk can make conversations with NPC challenging and hilarious.
C) Alignment. Pay attention to what the party's overall morals are. It's never a bad idea to have a moral compass.

Character: Luka the Lawbringer
Class: Paladin
Race: Lionkin
Alignment: Lawful Good

I'm gonna be a bit bias on this guy because he was my character that I played through out this story. Luka has a strong desire to bring peace and balance to the world around him, as you would expect from a Paladin. His appearance should reflect strong and fierce with a hint of kindness.
1) Perhaps a bit too fierce. I played around with the idea of him having a shield/gauntlet.
2) Classic hammer and shield build. I like the flow of hair on this one, reminds of me William Wallace.
3) This look has a strong unwavering feel to it. Full armor might be the way to go for the final look.
4) I based this design off ancient Greek soldiers. The spear is a unique fit with this character, even though it's not a traditional paladin weapon.
5) Strong and confident is the first thing that comes to mind on this one. The left arm being the only armored section on his body is an interesting take, but I don't think it makes too much sense contextually.

Please allow me to introduce myself. I'm the illustrator/art director for this fantastic adventure. You can call me Grim. The art that you see on this page will be a combination of character concepts, environment, weapons, items, and much more.

Now that we got that out of the way, let's talk about the post. This is the first draft of the book cover. We see our heroes overlooking an invading army, led by a great evil. The biggest challenge with scenes like this are balancing all the elements. I need to rethink how I arrange our heroes in the foreground so that they're silhouette's are much more readable. The size of the army seems a bit too small, so I definitely need to scale it up a bit. The sky is the only element that seems to be clicking in this scene, but I might have to reposition the mountains and add a tree line.
NOTE: The character designs in this are not the official designs.

I know people are usually in one camp or the other when it comes to prologues, but personally I love them. In my opinion they are the foundation of world building.

While chapter one of the book begins at the start of our second DnD campaign, the prologue starts at the end of the first. As it's currently written the prologue shows a piece of the world's history before introducing the new cast of characters. But honestly I feel like it's a bit bloated.

Even though I love prologues, I also feel that if laid on too thick, it can kill the momentum of the book before it even gets going. So I'll likely cut the character intros and leave the historical event or I'll scrap the whole prologue and rebuild it. Or maybe I'll post it here and let y'all decide. Stay tuned.

So, what is the book about? The short answer is swords, magic, kings, and monsters. Long answer is the eternal struggle between good and evil, and the fine line between the two. It's nowhere near based on a true story, but it is based on a true TTRPG experience which gives it a unique flair. Though the characters are entirely fictional, the choices they make in the story were made by real people. Each of the main characters embodies the personality of the person who played them in the Dungeons and Dragons campaign.

The world itself is a fantasy, medieval setting where making the wrong decision or trusting the wrong person can get you killed just as easily as it can make you an enemy of the king. It's a world where a ragtag group of wannabe heroes quickly realize that there is so much more beyond the city they call home.

Welcome travelers, my name is D.M. Peterson and I'm here to take you on an adventure. I've been running a Dungeons and Dragons campaign for my friends for the past ten years now. Over the last decade we've had a ton of fun, but we've also made quite a story. It only felt natural to take our campaign and turn it into a fantasy novel.

Through this page, I want to give a behind the scenes look into the writing process and production of the book. Character bios, concept art, my writing process, everything will be shared here.

Make sure you follow to stay up to date on everything related to the story of the Halfblood Company.

Pinkey's Staff Concept:
1) A common element with most magical staffs is they always have some giant jewel/stone. It's a classic look.
2) I just bedazzled a unicorn horn. Moving on.
3) Staff of great power or elaborate torch? It's the only concept that doesn't have an organic look to it, but I'm not too sure if it's a fit for a druid.
4) Went a little crazy with this one. I actually kind of dig it but the problem is it looks a little too powerful. Looks more like a necromancer's weapon than a druid's staff.
5) A druid is one with nature so obviously he needs to carry around something natural. Perhaps a small tree.
6) This design has a strong balance of nature and mystique. I was debating on putting a gem on the top of it but I decided it looks stronger as it is.
