Ever wondered how a book cover comes to life?

There’s so much more research, planning, and strategy behind the scenes than you might expect.

At Brown Books, our design process starts with “cover homework” from the author where we collect their ideas, inspirations, and preferences. From there, we pair their vision with market research in the book’s genre to create a range of cover concepts.

Our design team then brings these concepts to a leadership review, where senior staff from design, editorial, and PR narrow them down to the two strongest options. Depending on the book, we may start with anywhere from 5–15 concepts before selecting the top two to present. In hybrid publishing, author input matters and our authors have the final say on their cover design.

📖 Here’s a shot from a recent leadership meeting as the team deliberates over cover options for Micheal Youngblood’s forthcoming title The Evolution of U.S. Mortgage Securities: Lessons Learned through Four Decades of Innovation (1970-2010)
