Dallas Doing Good

Dallas Doing Good Dallas Doing Good is a digital media platform focused on creating and sharing stories that support good news and good work in North Texas.

Everywhere we turn we see someone who is dedicating time, resources, and energy to making our city and our world a better place. Dallas Doing Good was started with a hope that sharing these stories we would inspire more people to do the same. After more than four years of reporting, we are happy to see that our intuition was correct and that positive community stories do, in fact, lead to more rob

ust involvement with local good work. The editorial team and volunteer contributors purposefully seek out stories about the helpers, leaders, entrepreneurs, and problem-solvers across North Texas, with a focus on collaboration and long-term impact.

UNT Dallas just launched the Trailblazer Tuition Trust, a new program covering full tuition and mandatory fees for up to four years for qualifying freshman students pursuing their first bachelor's degree. The program is designed for Texas high school graduates from families earning $100,000 or less, and funding is delivered through a combination of federal, state, and institutional grants and scholarships.

To qualify, students must be eligible for the Federal Pell Grant and Priority Texas Grant, be a Texas resident graduating from a Texas high school, and enroll at UNT Dallas. No separate application is needed. Students who meet the criteria are automatically considered.

The deadline to apply for Fall 2026 was June 1, but students are encouraged to get on the radar early for future cycles. To keep the award, students must maintain a 3.0 GPA, stay in good academic standing, and remain enrolled full-time each fall and spring for up to eight consecutive semesters.

UNT Dallas President Dr. Warren von Eschenbach announced the program at his May 1 investiture, calling it the centerpiece of a renewed institutional mission to make higher education accessible to those for whom it has historically been out of reach.

Swipe to learn more about eligibility, renewal requirements, and how this will help future students.

Feel Good Friday: Meet Juston P., CityLab High School's valedictorian and the school's first student with autism spectrum disorder to earn that honor.

Diagnosed with Asperger's around age three, Juston spent his early years navigating challenges with speech, social cues, and overstimulation. But somewhere along the way, he made a choice to see those challenges differently.

"They are not mental challenges; they are special gifts," Juston said. "You can use these special gifts to help you out on this journey. They don't have to hinder you but rather help you grow."

That mindset carried him all the way to the top of his class.

At CityLab, Juston found a school that fit him. The smaller campus, the open environment, the teachers who believed in him. He graduated on the environmental sustainability pathway, where he discovered a deep connection between plant science and medicine. As part of the first-ever fall cohort of Big Tex Urban Farms during the 2025 State Fair of Texas, he gained hands-on experience in greenhouse training, hydroponics, and crop management.

This fall, he heads to the The University of Texas at Austin to study biochemistry, with plans to become an anesthesiologist.

"I hope the legacy I left is that you can be on the spectrum and do what I did, or even more."

We think Dallas will be hearing a lot more from Juston P. Congratulations, Longhorn!! 👏

Dallas nonprofit Miles of Freedom is now featured in The Legacy Experience, the National Civil Rights Museum's reimagined exhibit that opened May 16 in Memphis. Housed in the building once known as "where the shot came from," the exhibit traces the civil rights movement from Dr. King's assassination to the present.

MILES of Freedom appears in the Nonviolence pillar, connecting the principles of nonviolence to the lasting impact of incarceration, policing, and voting rights. Founder Richard Miles knows that connection personally.

MILES of Freedom supports individuals and families impacted by the justice system by meeting urgent needs, building restorative relationships, and creating pathways to opportunity. Through individualized case management, job readiness, workforce training, food access, mentorship, and pre-release programming, the organization helps people rebuild their lives and achieve lasting stability, providing the reentry system Richard Miles wished had existed for him.

Feel Good Friday: Chris Young spent 13 years in federal prison for nonviolent drug offenses. Inside, he built a self-taught curriculum, dreamed of college, and never stopped believing in his future. This May, he walked across the stage at SMU to earn his degree in economics and public policy.

Congratulations, Chris!! 👏

A little family found their forever home. 🐷❤️

Susie the pig recently welcomed SIX adorable piglets at the Dallas Animal Services and Adoption Center. Mom and babies are happy, healthy, and soaking up all the snuggles.

The center put them all up for adoption on May 18, and they have since found their forever home all together, where livestock is welcome!

This May, we celebrate the stories, struggles, and contributions of Asian American and Pacific Islander communities, right here in Dallas.

The DFW Metroplex has become one of the fastest-growing Asian American metro areas in the United States. And as our community grows, so does the need for spaces that honor the history that got us here.

The Dallas Asian American Historical Society is building that home. From the Museum of Asian Texans, the first cultural institution of its kind in Dallas, to oral histories and documentary films, DAAHS is preserving AAPI legacy for future generations.
