Take Action
Dear Friends and Supporters of Human Rights,
I write to you today with deep concern and urgency regarding a matter that strikes at the heart of truth, justice, and the integrity of our asylum system. Taye Bogale Arega was granted asylum in the United States after claiming to be a victim of political persecution by the Ethiopian regime. As a result, he was given protection, opportunity, and the legal right to rebuild his life in safety.
Yet today, we are witnessing a troubling contradiction. Despite receiving asylum on the grounds of persecution, Taye Bogale Arega has begun to actively support the same regime he claimed threatened his life and freedom. He expressed online support for the regime or its leaders and engaged in political activity aligned with the oppressive government.
This is not a minor issue of personal opinion. It raises serious questions about the validity of the original asylum claim and whether U.S. protections were misused in bad faith.
Why This Matters:
• It undermines the credibility of genuine asylum seekers, many of whom still face real threats from oppressive regimes.
• It violates the spirit and law of the asylum system, which is built on trust, evidence, and integrity.
• It may constitute a legal basis for revocation of asylum or permanent residency, under 8 C.F.R. § 208.24 and related U.S. immigration law.
