The weld on the shop crane broke today. I think there is a lack of pe*******on. I'm hoping someone can confirm this or correct me if I'm wrong. As a result, the burden decreased. A two-ton crane weighs a thousand pounds.

A body rib inside a haul truck had cracked loose from sharp rock impact. I removed the old weld and tapered the rib end so the repair would not create a hard stop. I welded the rib with E7018 using staggered stitch welds on both sides. Each stitch had a small root and a smooth cap. The welds were left unpainted before inspection. The final stitches had even spacing, feathered ends, and clean toe blending into the floor plate. The truck dumped several rock loads with no fresh cracking.

Newbie question about welding SS 16Gauge tube
I’m getting black sooting on my welds, tried several ideas from this group and you tube and still can’t dial it in
304 SS Tube
Blue tungsten sharp
Size 8 cup with gas lense
Tried Argon flow from 16-25 (argon is clean and welds aluminum nice)
Alcohol cleaned part and welding rod
I’ve tried with and without filler rod, definitely cleaner without filler but still seems black once welded. Using Amazon 308 rods, but they seemed to have good reviews. The welds look clean if I brush them with SS brush after welding, but I don’t think the sooting is normal.
Any help is welcome
