Dr. Keith M. Wilkinson has been successfully directing brass bands for more than 50 years. He commenced regularly conducting brass bands while he was a student at the University Of Manchester and following two enjoyable periods directing Salvation Army bands he entered the highly competitive British brass band contesting scene in 1976. In the following 20 years he enjoyed an enormous amount of success, including having the privilege of directing the first-placed band in more than 40 contests with bands such as GUS, William Davis, and Newtongrange.

Since moving to the USA in 1996 he has received invitations to return to Britain and Europe to conduct and, following a recent appearance with Newtongrange Band, one commentator wrote 'a welcome return to the UK of a conductor of proven 24 carat class'. (Iwan Fox, www.4barsrest.com). He was also for a time principal guest conductor of Switzerland's Brass Band Fribourg.

Each of the bands he has directed have established an outstanding reputation for their concert presentations and these have been enhanced by the inclusion of some of Keith's brass band arrangements.

Since arriving in the USA he has continued his previous success by conducting the first-placed band on five occasions in different sections of the North American Brass Band Championships (NABBA). He is often in demand to adjudicate at NABBA and other high-profile contests.

Keith tried his hand at brass band orchestration while still in high school and this aspect of banding has continued to hold his attention. Some of his arrangements have been used as test pieces at major championships and he has more than 100 published arrangements with publishers in Britain, Switzerland and USA, including BrookWright Music.

** THREE CAROLS AT MIDNIGHT (BRASS BAND) MARTIN CORDNER **

Rooted in the sacred stillness of a French village on Christmas Eve, this attractive suite by Martin Cordner draws upon traditional carols that have echoed through centuries of candlelit chapels and midnight vigils.

Each movement offers a window into the Nativity story:

I. Mystery: Noël Nouvelet (Christmas Comes Anew) opens with modal wonder, evoking the anticipation of Christ’s coming and the quiet awe of Advent.

II. Cradle: Entre le boeuf et l’âne gris (Between the Ox and the Grey Donkey) rests in pastoral tenderness, where the newborn Savior lies between humble beasts, watched over by angels and the Virgin.

III. Joy: Il est né, le divin enfant (He is born, the Divine Infant) bursts forth in celebration, proclaiming the divine birth with rustic dance and jubilant praise. Together, these carols form a musical triptych - moving from mystery to intimacy to exultation. Three Carols at Midnight invites listeners to step into the hush of a French Noël, where the sacred story is told not only in word, but in melody, memory, and light.

All proceeds for this title will support the mission and ministry of The Salvation Army Delaware Command, USA.

** HAVE YOURSELF A MERRY LITTLE CHRISTMAS (VOCAL or CORNET/FLUGEL SOLO with BAND or PIANO) ARR. SAM CREAMER **

This attractive Bossa Nova-style arrangement for vocal or flugel/cornet soloist with brass band or piano has been made by Australian composer Sam Creamer.

The key is suitable for male or female vocalists, or in the absence of a vocal soloist a part has been supplied for flugel horn or cornet soloist. A piano accompaniment that matches the band arrangement is also available and may be used as an alternate accompaniment in the absence of a full band, or can be used simultaneously by a rhythm section alongside the brass band.

** FOR UNTO US A CHILD IS BORN (BRASS BAND) HANDEL ARR. KEVIN NORBURY **

Ever since the first performance in April 1742 in Dublin, Ireland, Messiah has been the iconic Christian oratorio. It is a work of genius with lyrics skillfully taken from the Bible by Charles Jennens and timeless music by G. F. Handel, and has been at the top of the Western musical canon for close to 300 years.

'For unto us a child is born' comes roughly halfway through Part One of the oratorio and is one of its most popular choruses, being the prophecy of the birth of a Messiah (Jesus) found in Isaiah chapter nine.

After years of performing Christmas music in larger ensembles and later adapting those traditions into euphonium duets with his friend Mick, Himes realized the need for arrangements that sound full and satisfying without a full ensemble.

As Himes explains, "Attempting to play duets using quartet books didn’t work well because the most suitable alto harmony constantly shifted between the second and third part lines. We also discovered that our duets attracted as many Christmas donations as full ensembles!"

Sean A. Brown is a freelance hornist, teacher, conductor and composer/arranger living in Oak Harbor, WA, USA. He manages an active brass lesson studio of 35+ students, and directs middle school and high school brass ensembles. He also holds a summer camp for brass players and directs a community horn ensemble. In addition he does multi-track recording for brass ensemble, as he is proficient on all brass instruments. Sean is the composer-in-residence for the Saratoga Orchestra of Whidbey Island and is currently working on a teacher certification programme through Western Washington University.

The Christmas season provides an ideal opportunity for beginner brass students to demonstrate their progress with this setting by Kenneth Downie of the favourite carol 'Away in a Manger'.

Scored for two or more soloists and accompanying ensemble or piano and percussion, the flexible scoring means various combinations of instruments can accompany the soloists. In addition, high quality MP3 brass and orchestral backing tracks are included, along with click tracks for practice purposes.

The general harmonic format of the Young Artists Series is in five parts. However, this piece will work equally well with larger groups, including full brass bands and wind bands.

This download includes PDF parts and full score, along with MP3 brass backing track and orchestral backing track, with and without click.

The music of Brian Bowen, FTCL, came into prominence within The Salvation Army, where many of his compositions and arrangements have been published.

He was Bandmaster for 25 years of the Salvation Army Band of Staines (his English home town) and also played flugel horn in the International Staff Band (1964-76).

For many years he worked in London as a music editor for The Salvation Army, Josef Weinberger Ltd and principally Schott/Eulenburg. In 1986 he moved to the USA to become Bandmaster of the New York Staff Band.

In 1992 he became a freelance music editor and resided with his wife, Lois, in Sarasota, Florida.

Brian sadly passed away, aged 82, in September 2022 and BrookWright is pleased to continue his legacy by making some of his music available.

** SIMPLY CAROLS - 45 FAVOURITE CHRISTMAS CAROLS FOR INTERMEDIATE ENSEMBLE **

Simply Carols has proved to be an invaluable and popular resource for many intermediate ensembles and above since its release in 2021. These 45 carols, all expertly arranged by Kevin Larsson, are designed to be flexible and playable by a wide range of different groups, including brass, winds and strings.

The arrangements use limited ranges, keys and rhythms and fingerings and slide positions are included for accidentals on the brass parts. Parts are available in both march card and A4 size. Scored for quartet, the arrangements will work just as well with larger groups.

** VENI, SANCTE SPIRITUS (BRASS BAND) GEOFFREY NOBES **

This beautiful and evocative new work was recently played by the A Band at The Salvation Army's UK Territorial Music School Final Festival.

Originally conceived as a ceremonial work for the Band of the Royal Air Force Regiment, it was written for a Thanksgiving Service at St Clement Danes Church - the Central Church of the RAF in London. The piece was inspired by the church’s thousand-year-old architecture and resonant acoustic, creating a soundscape that is both reverent and atmospheric.

In adapting the work for brass band, the composer introduces Vaughan Williams’s hymn tune 'Down Ampney', seamlessly woven into the final sections of the piece. This lyrical addition enhances the spiritual tone of the music, aligning perfectly with the hymn text 'Come Down, O Love Divine', and lending the work its new title and emotional depth.
