We asked our readers and friends to contribute $25,000 to support our Dallas-based bookstore, programming, and publishing archive. We received more than double that amount.

Deep Vellum is a nonprofit because we believe that serious literary publishing should not be determined by short-term sales. Our work would not be possible without the help of our donors, and we truly cannot thank you all enough.

One year ago, we released two of the most exciting books we’ve ever published. We think there is no better illustration of the incredible range and depth of our list than the fact that these two works appeared on the same day, and we want to celebrate.

SCHATTENFROH by Michael Lentz, translated from the German by Max Lawton. A form-shattering experiment in consciousness traversing the longue durée of European history without leaving a mysterious basement, weighing in at 1001 pages.

THE RUINS by Ye Hui and translated by D**g Li has been shortlisted for the Lucian Stryk Asian Translation Prize!

Judges citation: “Ye Hui’s The Ruins intuitively shapeshifts between the metaphysical and the organic, transforming a “crawling” soul into a black bird, then a “lost dog” that “follows human shadows.” Embracing fate, the blooming of fruit trees in the poet’s universe requires “an eerie ritual / of sacrifice ….” Unlike Shelley’s Ozymandias, where decayed monuments symbolize failed imperial hubris, Ye Hui’s ruins, via D**g Li’s graceful translation, embody a cyclical view of nature and human existence. By asking if some wreckage might just be an “unfinished castle”—or a metamorphosis in progress—Ye Hui articulates a dispassionate yet hopeful view on the eternal fluidity of all things.”
