"There are writers who speak about their process with great insight and beauty. I don’t know if I can speak about my process with any insight because I don’t want to think about it. I just dive into writing. I have a crystal-strong sense of form. I cannot explain it, it goes through my whole body but it’s not only physical."

“We read to experience worlds, lives and stories beyond what we already know. If we read only books that confirm what we already know (even if they do so with beautiful language and storytelling), we’re missing out on all the pleasures that literature has to offer. When we have little time to read in our busy lives, why not read books that challenge and expand our existing notions of the world?”
-Jenny Bhatt, interviewed by Joyce Sáenz Harris for The Dallas Morning News

It always warms our hearts to see literary love for our repeat authors. Alisa Ganieva's latest, OFFENDED SENSIBILITIES, trans. Dr. Carol Apollonio, chronicles a series of sudden deaths that occur among officials of a provincial Russian town amidst a broken legal system. Catch a review on The Modern Novel (https://www.themodernnovel.org/asia/central-asia/dagestan/ganieva/offended-sensibilities/) or find it in very good company among The Chicago Review of Books' 12 Must-Read Books of November (https://chireviewofbooks.com/2022/11/01/12-must-read-books-of-november-2/).

Solenoid spottings! So great to see Sean Cotter's translation in The New Yorker ("As in the work of Kafka, whose diaries the narrator adores, the book’s horror and humor are born from examining 'the tragic anomaly of the spirit dressed in flesh.'") and The Brooklyn Rail ("one of those rare books you should have in your library because its shelf life will endure as long as literature lasts," Alta Ifland).

Happy publication day to OFFENDED SENSIBILITIES! This latest from political fictionalist Alisa Ganieva, masterfully translated from the Russian by Dr. Carol Apollonio, presents an unfortunately prescient portrait of a legal system in which everything is broken and no one is innocent. Timely, entertaining, and incisive, this novel is Ganieva's greatest accomplishment to date.

Our Book of the Day is "Country of Origin" by Dalia Azim (Deep Vellum Publishing). In this multigenerational family saga, Azim deftly intertwines the political revolution in 1950s Egypt with the personal revolutions of four family members who must confront the disappearance of one of their own. Publishers Weekly writes, "Azim’s evocative debut ... gradually reveal[s] hidden layers of the story, enriching her characters and illuminating the heart of a country and people. The result is insightful and nuanced," while Lara Prescott declares the story "lyrical, piercing, and powerful." If you'd like to read "a rich, character-driven novel about personhood, enduring love, and immense grief" (Foreword Reviews, starred review), stop by the store or call us on 512-322-2097 for curbside pick up.

It's always a fun day when journalist/author Alfredo Corchado visits. And today was especially enjoyable because he brought along award-winning author Ben Fountain (front right) and Will Evans, founder of Deep Vellum Publishing, one our favorite presses. Ben's debut novel, "Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk" (2012), winner of a National Book Critics Circle Award, is one of the most important modern/contemporary works of war fiction.
Happy birthday to El Paso's own Octavio Solis, an award-winning playwright and author who along with his wife, Jeanne Sexton, is in town this week for the Texas Institute of Letters conference and awards dinner.
