Thanks to our friends at D Magazine for helping spread the word about NORTH SUN and TERROR COUNTER, which were both nominated for the National Book Award last week!

With the nominations of North Sun in the fiction category, and Terror Counter in the poetry category, Deep Vellum is the only independent publisher nominated in more than one category for the 2025 awards!

September 18th is NORTH TEXAS GIVING DAY, the largest community-wide giving event in the nation, and now is the perfect time to get involved with Texas’ very own “globally acclaimed” publishing house. We are so much more than the little bookstore on commerce street, and none of it would be possible without support from organizations like the Communities Foundation of Texas, and from readers like you!

We continue our trip from Texas, to the World, and back again to show you that Deep Vellum is more than just our little building on Commerce Street!

Stop into our storefront in Dallas and you can pick up a copy of THE BOOK OF HOMES by Andrea Bajani (expertly translated by Liz Harris), which was a finalist for the 2022 Strega prize, Italy’s most prestigious literary award! Just this past summer, Andrea Bajani won the 2025 Strega for his newest book, The Anniversary, which has been atop the bestseller lists in Italy ever since.

And should you find yourself in Rome, you can stop into the Almost Corner Bookshop for a great selection of English language books, including Deep Vellum titles, and who knows—maybe you’ll even see one of our authors!

We could not be more thrilled to announce that Ethan Rutherford’s NORTH SUN: or, THE VOYAGE OF THE WHALESHIP ESTHER has been nominated for the National Book Award for fiction!

A nineteenth century whaling epic, reimagined for an era of climate change, North Sun is a visionary and unique novel, and we love seeing it included in a class of such brilliant writers. Congratulations to all!

Continuing our trip from Texas, to the world, and back again—we head to France to tell you about PLASMAS by Celine Minard, translated by Annabel L. Kim!

This remarkable collection of speculative-fiction was the winner of the 2022 French Prix De L’Imaginaire, and imagines countless futures with stunning depth and ingenuity.

Daniela Tarazona’s THE ANIMAL ON THE ROCK is a quintessential Deep Vellum book: ambiguous and dreamlike, but carried on an unforgettable narrative voice. A book that one can read in a single sitting, and turn over in their mind for years to come.

Translated from the Spanish by the always-excellent Lizzie Davis and Kevin Gerry Dunn, THE ANIMAL ON THE ROCK follows a woman named Irma, who takes a vacation on some faraway beach in the wake of her mother’s death.

In the course of her grief, she lays out in the sun, and begins to find that her body is slowly becoming covered in scales. Eschewing easy symbolism or didactic parable, Tarazona focuses instead on the visceral nature of metamorphosis: where the “before” and “after” are less important than the moment of change itself.

THE ANIMAL ON THE ROCK, and its predecessor, DIVIDED ISLAND (also translated by Lizzie Davis and Kevin Gerry Dunn) are both available now!

…and on the other side of the Earth, you can stop into Transit Bookshop in Jakarta, Indonesia and find books published by Deep Vellum! Transit is a small, but mighty, bookshop whose expert curation is the key to their success.

As the largest publisher of literature in translation, Deep Vellum is always trying to bring the rest of the world to Texas, but we are also trying to bring Texas to the rest of the world.
