🚨Flash Flood Emergencies Continue Across Southern Louisiana & Mississippi🚨

The remnants of Tropical Storm Arthur 🌀 continue to produce catastrophic flooding across parts of southern Louisiana and Mississippi.

Preliminary reports indicate more than 24 inches of rain has fallen in some locations roughly 60 miles north of Lafayette, while widespread totals of 10 to 15 inches have been reported northeast of New Orleans and across portions of southern Mississippi.

Multiple Flash Flood Emergencies remain in effect, signaling a life-threatening flooding situation. Roads and bridges may be washed out, and floodwaters can rise rapidly with little warning.

Please keep everyone impacted by this historic flooding event in your thoughts and prayers.

If you live in a flood-prone area, move to higher ground immediately if instructed by local officials, and never drive through flooded roadways. Turn Around, Don't Drown.

I'll continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as conditions warrant. 🌧️🙏

I'm hearing a lot of buzz on social media that Arthur should not have been classified as a tropical storm. While it's true that the strongest winds reached only around 45 mph and much of the deep convection remained displaced east of the center of circulation, it's important to remember that tropical systems are not judged by wind alone.

Tell that to residents across the southeastern United States dealing with catastrophic flooding, tornadoes, and dangerous weather today. Some areas have received 15 to 25 inches of rain since yesterday evening.

Any tropical system moving slowly and producing excessive rainfall deserves our attention, regardless of whether it's a tropical depression, tropical storm, or hurricane.

Tropical Storm Allison in 2001 is a perfect example. Allison was only a minimal tropical storm, yet it produced catastrophic flooding across the Houston metro area. More than 40 inches of rain fell in some locations, causing billions of dollars in damage and numerous fatalities. Allison remains the only tropical storm name ever retired from the Atlantic hurricane naming list.

The remnants of Tropical Storm Arthur continue to wreak havoc across portions of the southeastern United States this afternoon. Tornado watches remain in effect across southern Alabama and west-central Georgia, including parts of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The flooding threat will continue through the end of the week as tropical moisture streams northward.

The lesson is simple: don't focus solely on the category or wind speed. Water is often the deadliest part of a tropical system.

Stay weather aware.
