The editors of Translation Review are inviting submissions. We are particularly interested translations of contemporary international writers into English and submissions that discuss the process and practical challenges of translating.

We would also be happy to consider and interviews with translators, manuscripts that address the concept of translation in the visual and musical arts (intersemiotic or multimodal translations), as well as submissions that address issues of machine translation, AI translations, and translation in the digital age in general. Proposals for special issues are also welcome.

Deadline for submissions: March 16, 2026 (for consideration in the November 2026 issue).

The new issue of Translation Review—TR 122—is now available online. The issue opens with our interview with famed translator Peter Bush who has been greatly influential in the growth of literary translation as a profession and as an academic discipline. The interview is followed by Anne Milano Appel’s translation of an excerpt from Italian translator Silvia Pareschi’s 2024 publication of Fra le righe: Il piacere di tradurre [Between the Lines: The Joy of Translating]; H.S. Komalesha’s translation of excerpts from Dharamveer Bharati’s Kanupriya (1959); Safi Mafouz’s article on the challenges of translating Medieval Arabic literature; and Paula Haydar’s analysis of four translations from Arabic into English of Abu Nuwas’s poem “Daʿ ʿanka lawmī.” The issue closes with reviews of works in translation and scholarship on translation.

The new issue of Translation Review—TR 121—is a special issue dedicated to the work of Jewish German philosopher and translator Walter Benjamin to commemorate the one hundredth anniversary of his 1923 essay “The Task of the Translator” [“Die Aufgabe des Übersetzers,” translated by Harry Zohn]. The issue, which is guest edited by American Norwegian scholar Stephen Dougherty and co-edited by Susan Erdmann, is based in large part on a symposium—dedicated to Benjamin’s iconic essay—that took place in 2023 at the University of Agder in Kristiansand, Norway. The articles in this issue explore Benjamin’s essay from a variety of interdisciplinary vantage points that attest to its ongoing importance more than one hundred years after its initial publication as the introduction to his translation of French poet Charles Baudelaire.

Guidelines
Scholarly manuscripts should follow the Chicago Manual of Style EB (endnotes and bibliography).
Translations should be accompanied by a short essay introducing the author and contextualizing the text and a brief essay detailing the reconstruction of the translation process. We welcome submissions of translations of short stories, individual chapters of books, or a selection of 5-10 poems. Creative submissions must also include documentation of permission to translate and publish as well as the text in the original language.

We will consider manuscripts from 5 pages in length up to 25 pages in length (1000-7000 words; manuscripts should be submitted in a Microsoft Word docx, double-spaced, 12-point font).

TR 120—the new issue of Translation Review—is now available online (for individual and institutional subscribers). In this issue, we have three interviews: our conversation with Damion Searls, Alaaeldin Mahmoud’s interview with Marilyn Booth, and DP Snyder’s conversation with Suzanne Jill Levine. In addition, we have articles on Booth’s award-winning translation of Jokha Alharthi’s Celestial Bodies; poetry translation done by ChatGPT-4; points of potential conflict in translaboration; an analysis of Louise Varèse’s translation of Rimbaud’s Illuminations; an article discussing translating César Moro’s surrealist poetry; and finally, an article on Muna Lee’s translations of Carrera Andrade. The issue opens with an editorial written by our founding editor, Rainer Schulte, on translation as an act of interpretation, which is followed by our interview with Ellen Elias-Bursać, past ALTA president and translator from the Croatian, Bosnian, Montenegrin, and Serbian. In addition, we have Erik Noonan’s translation of Ricardo Piglia’s “A Fish in Ice”; an article by Ha-yun Jung on the Korean poet Chǒng Chi-yong; and an article by Qiuyang Pan, et al, on the potential of digital technologies. As always, we close with reviews; this issue includes book reviews written by Jeffrey Diteman, Baorong Wang, Adrian Wanner, and Don Bogen.
