The True Headliners of Portola Festival? The Filipino Cuisine.

While electronic music’s biggest names rocked the stages of Portola Festival on a sunny weekend at San Francisco’s Pier 80, another kind of star power was quietly, yet powerfully, making waves across the festival grounds: Filipino food.

From Señor Sisig, Mano Po, and Kapwa Cafe, Filipino cuisine had a particularly popular presence in the two-day event, offering authentic flavors in filling, yet easy handheld portions, and tropical beverages for a fruity refreshment that further amplified the festival experience.

Even other vendors like Me So Hungry Too and Lao BBQ & Sticky Rice were showcasing traditionally Filipino flavors like ube, pandan, and calamansi, solidifying the increasingly visible world of Filipino ingredients.

Music may be the main attraction at Lollapalooza, but every festival veteran knows that the food is just as much a part of the experience. Frameline50 Uplifts the Power, Resilience, and Visibility of Q***r AAPI Storytelling

It was a whirlwind 10 days of q***r cinematic celebration as Frameline50 marked a historic half-century milestone in San Francisco. From June 17–27, the newly restored Castro Theatre, alongside the beloved venues of the Roxie and Vogue Theatres, welcomed thousands of film lovers far and wide to celebrate an expansive lineup of LGBTQ+ films from acclaimed and emerging global filmmakers.

From jubilant opening-night premieres and groundbreaking documentaries to long-overdue restorations of q***r cinematic landmarks, heartfelt coming-of-age stories, and irreverently uplifting comedies, Frameline50 celebrated the full spectrum of q***r storytelling. Representation and Reimagining Filipino Classics at SOBEWFF: “I Love That I Can Open Up a Conversation”

South Beach W**e & Food Festival 2026 kicked off a spectacularly sunny Miami weekend, and a particular standout in attendance was the incredibly talented Chef Janice “Jae” de Castro of Keyks. Delivering radiant Filipino sweetness to the beachside Grand Tasting Village all the way from a currently frigid Queens, Chef Jae showcased her signature reimagined desserts that imbued both a sense of nostalgia and tradition with modern innovations.

A divinely creamy coconut pie and playfully creative combination Ube Flan Cake were proudly on full display by Chef Jae, reverberating summery tropical flavors that also platformed staple cultural Filipino ingredients and became the ideal sweet finisher from the hundreds of other vendors.

After years outside of the culinary industry as a marketing and communications director, Chef Jae discovered her passion for baking while staying home with her children, inspired by her mother, who was known in their community as the “dessert queen.” That maternal influence led to the creation of Jae NYC Eats, now Keyks, with prominently beloved locations in New York City and Orange County/LA that all serve nostalgic, Filipino-inspired twists on childhood treats like her signature Twinkie-style “Keyks” and Kukis.

More than just a booth, her presence at SOBEWFF’s 25th year marked a proud celebration of heritage, resilience, and the growing visibility of Filipino cuisine on a national stage. We caught up with Chef Jae to talk about representing Filipino identity through food and the industry, reinventing classic flavors, and what it means to share her story through dessert.
