FROM RUSSELL WALSH: As of December 3, 2025, Loveland Reservoir, in the rural part of East San Diego County sits precariously at about 33 percent capacity. The ongoing water transfer by Sweetwater Authority has placed the treasured public fishing program—secured through a historic land swap with the US Forest Service—in immediate and serious jeopardy.

With the intention of leaving the reservoir at roughly 25 percent full after a few more days, Sweetwater is effectively undermining the Forest Service easement for public fishing on 1,550 acres of federal land surrounding Loveland Reservoir. This vast area was gained for public recreational use under agreements that hinged on maintaining adequate water levels to support a thriving fishing program. Setting the pool at such a low level is a bait and switch: a sharp departure from the 35 percent or higher capacity that would enable a functional fishery and honor the original promises made during the land swap.

Moreover, the roughly 10 percent difference between 25 and 35 percent full is trivial. A significant portion of that water will evaporate or be absorbed during transit and storage at Sweetwater Reservoir downstream, meaning the real available volume for customers and the environment is not being used in a balanced way. This mismatch leaves the public’s access to a recovering fishery severely compromised, while the Authority has very modest water savings at the expense of rural outdoor heritage and ecological functions.

Anglers, outdoor advocates, and local residents deserve transparency, enforcement of legal easements, and water management decisions that value recreation alongside urban supply. Until then, Loveland Reservoir’s shrinking waters symbolize a deeper failure to balance nature, community, and resource stewardship.

After an exhaustive search spanning several days involving the U.S Coast Guard, Mexican Navy, private boat operators, drones, two land-based high-power radar systems and manned aircraft, the search for a popular San Diego-based fishing personality was called off. Sources close to the situation told Western Outdoor News that the body of Michael Rijavec of the YouTube channel, “SD Fish and Sips” was found by a local fisherman working near San Cristóbal fishing camp in Bahia Tortuga Sunday morning.

Rijavec’s last known position was 8 miles off San Roque near Bahia Asuncion in Baja per his mayday call that was issued at approximately 3 p.m. on November 11. A very rough estimate of where the distress call was made and where he was located suggests he was found up to if not exceeding 40 miles from his last known position.

A day after Rijavec went missing, his kayak was found floating upside down. SD Fish and Sips had over 20,000 subscribers and 550 videos, many of which featured the Solo Skiff that he was fishing from when he was lost at sea. As of November 16 (the day his body was found), the GoFundMe campaign had brought in just under $48,000.

Here is the latest official update from Mikey’s family, via Shari Bondy. “Please refrain from calling & messaging [them directly] for updates as everyone has a lot going on & respect the family’s privacy in this difficult time.

‘First of all, we want to thank the community of Bahía Asunción, everyone that has generously donated, the Mexican Navy, and Mikey’s vast network of friends and fishermen that have been incredibly supportive and helpful during this very stressful time. The outpouring of support really says a lot about Mikey and his impact. Also, we would like to apologize for the lack of information and updates from this GoFundMe so far and we appreciate your patience.

We hope you understand that our priority has been to coordinate our efforts directly to search so far and navigate a very chaotic situation we never thought we’d be in, as well as support each other as a family. We’ve had dozens of local boats in the water in coordination with the Navy and hired private planes to provide aerial support for this search, as well as ground searches along the coast. With that said, there has been a lot of activity on social media, which just goes to show how widely loved Mikey is, but much of that information is speculative and potentially confusing to everyone eager to know what’s going on.

Our family has been actively co-leading the local response alongside the Mexican Navy and community organization. Yesterday, Mikey’s older brother and Dad arrived in Bahía Asunción to a loving embrace by the locals and have met with the Navy’s leadership this morning. During which, we have received additional details about Mikey’s disappearance from the Navy, which we cannot share publicly. The Navy is going to continue their search in the same manner today as they have since his disappearance, however, local teams are decreasing the number of personnel on the water and have started combing all local beaches.

Unfortunately, given the information provided to our family this morning by the Navy, the nature of the search may change soon. Again, thank you for all the love and support. Today and everyday, stay positive’”

Update: Mikey’s skiff, with no motor, has been found overturned north of San Pablo, post has been updated with photo. We will continue to provide details as they become available.

From Shari Bondy: Our friend Mikey Rijavec is missing since yesterday afternoon when he issued a Mayday from his kayak while out fishing. Last known position was 8 miles out from San Roque near Bahia Asuncion & possibly his motor broke down.
There is a very strong northerly current so he probably drifted north towards Bahia Tortuga’s where the cooperativa there will also be assisting in the search.
Local boats searched till midnight last night & more boats resumed the search this morning. The Marines are also involved & dispatched a patrol boat from Cedros Island & hope to do an aerial search this morning.
Supposedly a Marines helicopter is coming from Ensenada.
Also more planes are now searching.
We are in communication with his family now thankfully. Please message me here or call me at +52 615-155-7197.
Pray for Mikey’s rescue!
