🖊Publisher's Note

Welcome to the August edition of Stroll Davidsonville!

This month, we are pleased to feature Don and Pamela Smart. This couple’s claim to fame is that they are probably the only household in Davidsonville with a flock of Katahdin sheep grazing in their pasture. You may wonder why they chose to raise sheep in the first place. Please take a few minutes to read their story to find out why.

We are also happy to introduce Davidsonville’s newest dentist, Dr. Marc Eun. Dr. Marc has acquired the practice of Wooddell & Passaro Restorative and Esthetic Denistry. Dr. Marc spent his first year of dentistry doing pro bono work. That fact alone speaks highly of his character. Perhaps you are a current patient of Drs. Woody and Joe, or you are looking for a dentist. Then, do not miss this month’s spotlight on the new Davidsonville Dental Group.

As always, we love to highlight kids in the community. This month we have a collage of photos from a recent Gators’ swim meet. You may likely see a familiar face or two. Go Gators!

To our dedicated business sponsors, thank you for your continual support. This magazine would not be possible without each one of you. To our residents, we hope you will continue supporting the quality businesses featured in this magazine.

Finally, please note that this magazine is not associated with your local HOA. If you have any questions involving your HOA, please contact them directly.

All the best,

✈️Travel Tales: Northern Italy

We were not technically in Tuscany but rather in an adjacent region called Veneto, whose “look and feel” of this part of Italy comports quite perfectly with your mental image of sun-drenched hillside vineyards and rustic farmhouses.

This was essentially an overnight way station en route to the towns of Asolo and Bassano del Grappa.

Bassano has two claims to fame, one being an attractive covered bridge that was built in 1569, repeatedly destroyed by fire, and rebuilt most recently about 50 years ago. But the part of its history of which Bassano is most proud – and probably makes the most money off of – is the “del Grappa” part, the birthplace of grappa. Grappa, if you are not familiar with it, is the highly potent, multiple-distilled product of, essentially, the dregs of the wine-making process.

We continued on to our destination for the next four days: Vicenza, about an hour’s drive further. Vicenza is a somewhat larger town of about 100,000, somewhat spread out with actual suburbs but enjoying an old walled city in the center, the nexus of its cultural heritage. Our plan was to use it as a base of operation for the next four days, visiting some of the surrounding towns like Padua and Verona. Our B&B – a quite spectacular 14th-century castle – was located on a hillside outside of town.

🏡Meet Your Neighbors: Kevin and Hannah Lo: Navy Helicopter Pilots

“It will be an adventure.” That’s how Hannah Lois, Marine Corps helicopter pilot, sums up her family’s next big chapter — packing up their Davidsonville home and heading to Bahrain for two years.

The couple first met in class at the U.S. Naval Academy, where they were both oceanography majors — he graduated in 2015, she in 2016. From there, their lives became a thrilling hopscotch across the country: Quantico, Pensacola, Corpus Christi, Milton, San Diego, Hawaii, Alexandria… each stop another puzzle piece in their dual-military careers.

For the past two years, the Lois family has called Davidsonville home. Here they welcomed their second daughter, Amelia, adding to their lively household alongside two-year-old Ellie and their dog, Karl.

Life at home has been more grounded these days, with Hannah working in cybersecurity at Fort Meade and Kevin serving as a Company Officer at the Naval Academy. Soon, they’ll trade the tree-lined streets of Davidsonville for the bustling, sun-drenched landscape of Bahrain.

The move comes with cultural shifts: no base housing (they’ll rent a home in town), household staff included as part of the rental culture, and temperatures that soar to 130 degrees in the summer.

As they prepare for their move overseas, they’re already dreaming of returning to Maryland someday. “Ellie will be ready to start kindergarten by then,” Hannah says. “Hopefully, we’ll be lucky enough to come back here. We have the greatest neighbors, and we’re so sad to leave them.”

For now, the Lois family is embracing the next chapter with open arms — two pilots, two little girls, and one very spoiled dog, ready to take on the world. Because for Hannah and Kevin, it’s always been about more than just flying. It’s about living full throttle, with open hearts, in service to others.

⛪️The Churches Of Davidsonville: Part 1- The Episcopalians

The first church to serve the area was All Hallows Episcopal Church chartered in 1692 by King William and Queen Mary. By the Act of Establishment in that year, the General Assembly of Maryland divided the colony into 30 Anglican parishes. There is evidence that the Anglican, or Church of England, was a presence in this area as early as 1669. Gail Enright reported in an online history of All Hallows that a baptism was recorded in that year.

The first building was frame and was destroyed by fire. The replacement was brick, thus giving the name Brick Church Road to the road leading to it from Davidsonville. Burned again in the 1940s, it was rebuilt to its original Georgian style. The church is located at 3600 Solomons Island Road in Edgewater.

The chapel is at 864 West Central Avenue in Davidsonville, together with a cemetery of around 500 graves. Among them are those of Captain Thomas Watkins and his wife, Julia, as related in “The Un-Civil War in Davidsonville". All Hallows Church recently dedicated a memorial in honor of the enslaved workers who helped to build the Brick Church. A similar memorial will be dedicated at All Hallows Chapel this fall.

Currently, Rev. Jeff Hual serves All Hallows Church and Chapel. The website at www.allhallowsparish.org/ServiceInfo.shtml gives information on the times and forms of service at both locations, as well as, various Episcopalian missions and outreach to the community.

Thanks to Gail Enright and Bridget Blake for their contributions.

🛁Living Spaces: Making It Home: A Local Resident’s Creative Take on Bathroom Renovations

In our neighborhood, home isn’t just a place—it’s a reflection of the people who live there. That’s certainly true for longtime resident Nora Pangburn, who recently completed a three-bathroom renovation that beautifully blends craftsmanship with personal style.

What makes this project especially inspiring is that Nora wasn’t just the client—she was the designer. Collaborating with local contractor Summit Builders, she brought her vision to life through thoughtful details that make each space feel unique. One standout feature: a vintage dresser repurposed as a vanity, adding both charm and a sense of history.

The other two bathrooms are equally expressive, featuring hand-picked tile patterns, fixtures, and personal touches that reflect Nora’s personality. It’s a reminder that great design often begins not in a showroom, but with a story, a feeling, or a cherished piece of furniture.

📣"Have a Home Project You’re Proud Of?
Whether you’ve refreshed a single room or completed a full renovation, we’d love to hear about it! Selected projects will be professionally photographed and featured in an upcoming issue of Stroll Davidsonville. It’s a great way to celebrate the creativity in our community and spark ideas among neighbors. Let us know—we’d be honored to share your story.
