The move reflects a broader commitment to accessibility in arts education at the —removing cost as a barrier and opening doors for more community members to participate.

“For more than 65 years, Davis Arts Center has been a cornerstone of the arts community in Davis—and two years ago, we challenged ourselves to build on that foundation in a new way,” Executive Director Sam King said. “We stopped asking ourselves ‘what classes do we offer?’ and started asking ‘who are we leaving out?’”

Our June Issue is out now—and it’s packed full of summer nostalgia!

From Bob Dunning’s personal Davis history to how Creedence Clearwater Revival cemented Putah Creek into rock & roll legend status, plus a wistfully nostalgic summer camp getaway you need to have on your calendar.

Just two hours from downtown Davis, located in the redwoods of Guerneville, River Electric is a swim club and overnight getaway that can’t be ignored. Two pools (one for adults only), a bar serving high-end, chef-developed poolside bites and cocktails (just look at the cover image!), and fully furnished tents for overnight guests. It’s the perfect day trip or overnight adventure (learn more on page 22).

June is Pride month, and Davis celebrates all month long! We have all the information you need to celebrate Davis Pride on page 4.

In Davis, June also means Davis Music Fest. Three days of music and we have the full lineup on page 5.

Have you heard about Robin Greenfield, the environmental activist who is challenging himself to live for one year on only foods he has foraged? He’s traveling the country talking about the why behind his mission, and he’ll be stopping in Davis this month.

All of that and more—plus hundreds of local events—inside.

In an age of doomscrolling, disappearing newsstands, and digital headlines, one small shop in Davis is keeping print alive. 📰

For nearly 40 years, Newsbeat has been a home for newspapers, magazines, and community connection—carrying everything from The New York Times to niche independent publications you can’t find anywhere else.

Owners Janis and Terence Lott say people don’t just come for the magazines. They come for conversation, discovery, and the feeling of slowing down in a fast-moving world.

As print media changes, Newsbeat continues to survive by adapting—stocking gifts, cards, and curated publications while preserving the experience of browsing real pages in person.

“There is a Tinker Bell quality to print media,” Terence says. “If enough people believe in it, it will survive.”

Mah Jongg is having a moment—and Davis is ahead of the trend. 🀄️

Every Monday, the Davis Senior Center fills with the sound of clicking tiles, conversation and strategy as players gather for a game that’s become much more than a hobby. Nationwide, Mah Jongg events are surging (so is the business as a whole—worth $1.9 billion in 2024 and projected to reach $3 billion by 2035), but local players say the real draw is the community built around the table.

“It’s about a 10 minute period of time when you reveal things to each other,” instructor Janice Bridge told The Dirt. “It’s fascinating.”

Swipe to read more about the Mah Jongg community in Davis, and how to get a seat at the table. New players are welcome!
