Seems just yesterday it was June and I was writing about election coverage. Though the importance of Nov. 6 is known nationally, I’m focused closer to home.

Do you know a Davis girl age 14-17 who has taken initiative to lead a volunteer project? Soroptimist International of Davis sponsors a $1,000 Violet Richardson Award to recognize such a young leader, and encourage her to further her cause. Violet Richardson Awardrecognizes young women aged 14 to 17 who volunteer in their community or school. Girls are invited to apply for this annual $1,000 grant given by Soroptimist International of Davis.

So many things to do in Davis!

The Great California Paint Out! will be taking placeon September 29, 2012. Please register online, as spaces are moving quickly. This workshop gives participating artists an opportunity to paint in the entirety of downtown Davis in groups or individually. Those wishing to learn technique may work alongside one of ten master painters. This is no longer exclusive to landscapes, and all subjects available for observation are welcome. After the painting session is over, all participants work will be hung inside the John Natsoulas Gallery. There will be an opening reception from 7 to 10 pm, in which there will be a silent auction where the work will be sold. The master painters will then jury your work that is being exhibited and awards will be given out. Register online at http://www.natsoulas.com.

Downtown Concert Series featuring our great friends Hardwater, and Second Friday ArtAbout. Gotta love Davis!

As the summer nights begin to cool off, the Davis Downtown Summer Concert Series will heat things up at the Second Friday ArtAbout on Friday with Hardwater from 7 to 9 p.m. on the E Street Plaza, in the 200 block of Second Street in downtown Davis. Also on the E Street Plaza, the Pamela Trokanski Dance Theatre and Third Stage Dance Company will do a dance in public places during Hardwater’s set.

The Second Friday ArtAbout is a monthly evening of art viewing and artists’ receptions at galleries and businesses in Davis. Coordinated by the Davis Downtown, all events are free and open to the public. Many include complimentary refreshments and opportunities to converse with featured artists.

There are four new venues this month — Akasha Yoga, RE/MAX Gold, Upwelling Capital Group, and Bohème and Paulina’s Boutique — as well as two returning venues, the Hallmark Inn and Studio K. Several venues will feature live music, a DJ or special event: Armadillo Music, The Artery, Davis Art Center, Davis Developmental Pediatrics Group, Davis Odd Fellows Lodge, E Street Plaza, French Cuff Consignment, International House, Ray Johnston Photography Studio, Spa Central, The Wardrobe, The Work Shop and the Yolo SPCA Thrift Store.

Teams compete to recycle junk into beautiful, creative sculptures, finished works will be on view through Sept. 28. There will be music from the KDVS Mobile DJ Unit as well as food and drink for purchase from local vendors. Closing celebration, 5-7 p.m., for the Discovery Art program, “Cross Pollination: Sharing Art. Sharing Ideas,” featuring Rachel Hartsough, Tony Berger, Jeff Musser, Nadja Fitchhorn and other artists from the Davis community. * Summer Concert Series, E Street Plaza; 7-9 p.m., Hardwater has performed for 10-plus years in Yolo, Sacramento, Solano, Placer and El Dorado counties. The band offers a diverse mix of rock, blues, folk and American roots, with a healthy dose of tunes from the likes of Bob Dylan, the Grateful Dead, Mark Knopfler and Counting Crows among others.
