Odetta Holmes, known as Odetta, was an American singer, actress, guitarist, lyricist, and a civil and human rights activist, often referred to as "The Voice of the Civil Rights Movement". Her musical repertoire consisted largely of American folk music, blues, jazz, and spirituals. Anointed as the queen of American folk music by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. As an activist for social change, Odetta performed at the 1963 March on Washington and took part in the March on Selma. She performed for President Kennedy and his cabinet on the nationally televised civil rights special, Dinner with the President. Her career blossomed during the golden years of folk music when she began recording albums for Vanguard Records. Odetta has sung with symphony orchestras and in operas all over the world and has been a featured performer everywhere in the country, including the Newport Folk Festivals and in her solo concerts at Carnegie Hall. Malala Yousafzai, often referred to mononymously as Malala, is a Pakistani activist for female education and the youngest Nobel Prize laureate. For her 18th birthday on July 12, 2015, also called Malala Day, she opened a school for Syrian refugee girls in Lebanon. She is a symbol of peace and education. She has been standing strong til this very day. She has been awarded not only the Nobel Peace Prize, but the Philadelphia Liberty Medal, Order of the Smile, National Malala Peace Prize, United Nations Prize in the Field of Human Rights, Shorty Award for Teen Hero, and many more. We love you Malala and thank you for standing up for what is right.
