Cincinnati City Council passes new curfew for minors and more money for police

1) Citywide curfew of 11 p.m. for anyone unaccompanied under the age of 18.
2) Over-the-Rhine and Downtown of 9 p.m. for an unaccompanied minor in a curfew district south of Liberty Street.
3) Cincinnati Parks changes hours for five parks.
4) City council will spend $2 million more for police and public safety

Minors in violation of the curfew who refuse to go home will be taken to curfew centers where staff will attempt to locate their parents and homes. The curfew would provide exceptions, including going to and from work, emergencies and running errands on with the permission of a parent or guardian.

The curfew changes take effect immediately. Enforcement will begin as soon as contracts are signed with the two organizations running the curfew centers, Seven Hills Neighborhood Houses and Lighthouse Youth and Family Services. That could be as early as next weekend.

Cincinnati Parks changes hours for five parks. Smale Riverfront Park, Piatt Park, Ziegler Park, Washington Park and the Public Landing will now close at 9 p.m. The new policy will apply to people 18 or younger without a parent or guardian. People younger than 18 may, however, remain in the five specified parks past 9 p.m. if attending a city- or parks-sponsored event.

City council will spend $2 million more for police and public safety that could be spent on recruitment of police officers from other departments as well as to beef up security measures in Cincinnati's Central Business District. This would include walking and bike patrols as well as better lighting and security cameras, according to the motion.
