Memorial Day - The Weight They Carried
Today, we pause for the ones who never made it home…
and for the ones who did, but carried battles long after the war ended.
We remember the men and women who gave everything for this country.
Not for recognition.
Not for applause.
But for the people beside them.
For the flag behind them.
For the generations ahead of them.
Some paid the ultimate price on the battlefield.
Others fought silently once they returned home… carrying memories, pain, survivor’s guilt, trauma, and burdens too heavy for words.
To those who lost the battle within…
we mourn you, we honor you, and we thank you.
You are not forgotten.
Thirteen folds.
2.3 pounds.
The weight of a folded flag can be measured in ounces…
but to the families left behind, it weighs heavier than the world.
Behind every folded flag is a name.
A laugh that’s gone silent.
A chair that sits empty.
A family forever changed.
So today, while many celebrate freedom, remember the cost attached to it.
Freedom was paid for by sons, daughters, fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, and friends who sacrificed pieces... and sometimes all... of themselves so others could live freely.
To the fallen: we remember you.
To the Gold Star families: we grieve with you.
To the veterans still fighting silent wars inside themselves: you are seen, and you are not alone.
May we never become so comfortable in our freedom that we forget who paid for it.
