The Mississippi High School Activities Association is considering adding a seventh classification for sports. The MHSAA executive board discussed the proposal at its February meeting, but tabled action with a possible vote in April.
MHSAA executive director Rickey Neaves said the proposal results from a gap in enrollment figures between the largest and smallest schools in each class. The gap is especially pronounced in 6A, the largest class. Based on 9th through 12th grade enrollment figures for the current two-year period (2021-23), Tupelo is the largest 6A school with 1,907 students, Center Hill the smallest with 1,047, a gap of 860 students (82 percent).

Despite delays in getting the needed supplies in a timely manner, the construction of the water and sewer lines from the Town of DeKalb to the Kemper Crossing industrial park is expected to begin on March 14.
Zach Adams of the Board of Supervisors said that the order to proceed would be given to the contractor on March 14 and they would have 180 days (six months) to compete the project.

20 years now, where’d they go?
20 years, I don’t know …
I sit and I wonder sometimes
Where they’ve gone …

The fella on the right in the picture above was 9 months old when my daddy left this world on Feb. 4, 2002.
There are a lot of things I wish my daughter Meagan and son Jordan could have gotten to experience with him. For example, I think both of them (and every other baseball or softball playing child in rural Mississippi) should have to field some of his ground balls in PawPaw’s gravel driveway …
I can only imagine how some of the folks around Gholson would have grown tired of Daddy bragging on Meagan’s state softball championships. But as much as anything, I hate that Jordan never got to go to the woods with him.

Last Wednesday (Feb. 2) was a big day for Kemper County High School athletics as a whole and a half-dozen senior football players in particular.
Six members of the KCHS football team gathered in the KCHS gymnasium to sign football scholarships for the 2012-13 school year.
“It was a tremendously big day for us,” said KCHS defensive coordinator Andrew Powell. “It just shows the work that we put in and the kind of kids that we have. We have the kind of kids who can do great things in Kemper.”
Five athletes signed with community colleges, while one signed with an NCAA Division I program. Those signing were E.J. Jackson, Jamar Grace, Heaven Coleman, Kessler Thompson, Aaron Steele, and Junior Miller.

Noxubee County Attorney Rod Hickman claimed 60 percent of the vote across four counties to win the special election run-off for the District 32 Mississippi State Senate senate vacated with the retirement of longtime Senator Sampson Jackson of Kemper County.
In complete but unofficial results, Hickman took 4,302 votes to 2898 for Dr. Minh Duong a Meridian Optometrist.
Three weeks ago there were just under 7,000 votes cast in the general election which featured nine candidates for the remaining two-years on Jackson’s unexpired term,, but there were 7,200 cast in Tuesday night’s run-off, an increase of just over 200.
Hickman picked up 1,222 votes in Kemper County, while Duong received 775. There are 1,997 votes cast in Kemper County compared to 2,364 cast on Nov. 2.
In the Nov. 2 election Hickman led districtwide with 1,677 votes for 24 percent, with Duong finishing just behind with 1,611 votes for 23 percent.
The District 32 Senate Senate seat will be on the ballot again in 2023 in the state and county elections that are held every four years.
District 32 is made up of all of Kemper County and parts of Lauderdale, Noxubee, and Winston counties.
