Dancing Pony Productions is pleased to announce their production of a staged reading of Sierra Rosetta’s original play, “From the Old Wood Forest” at the Newberry Library in Chicago. Based on a true story, “From the Old Wood Forest” was featured at the 9th Annual Yale Indigenous Performing Arts Program’s New Native Play Festival in April 2024. The staged reading will take place at The Newberry – Ruggles Hall on Saturday, January 11, 2025 at 11:00 am.

“We are honored to present this staged reading of “From the Old Wood Forest” to our Chicago audience,” said Producer Louis Vasseur. “Sierra is one of the many talented up and coming young Native playwrights that are waiting for the opportunity to share their stories. Plus, we could not have asked for better partners on this project than the staff at The Newberry.”

“Chicago has long been a great theater town. I have been fortunate to have been a part of the theater community here for many years. Following the success of Madeline Sayet’s “Where We Belong” at the Goodman Theatre and Larissa FastHorse’s “The Thanksgiving Play” at Steppenwolf Theater, it is time we develop more quality Native theater to join that Chicago theater legacy. This project is a step towards that goal.”

Dancing Pony Productions’ presentation of “From the Old Wood Forest” is free and open to all. There will be a brief Q&A after the reading to collect audience reaction and feedback. Please go to https://www.newberry.org/calendar/from-the-old-wood-forest to reserve your spot.

For over ten years, the Harlem Veteran Project has interviewed and documented the stories of veterans from WWII forward, creating video documentaries of their stories. For the last couple years, we have teamed up with the students working on the Harlem Veteran Project to expand their stories to include Native veterans. Recently, we were honored to have one of the Native documentaries, Bill Smith - A Warrior in Time, be featured at the 2022 Beloit International Film Festival in Beloit, WI. This was a great way to share not only Bill's story, but the contributions that Native veterans have made defending this country, even before they were recognized as U.S. Citizens. For those who were unable to view the documentary in person, here is a link to it from the Harlem Veteran Project YouTube channel.

The staff at DPP love to shoot cons. We had a blast shooting approximately 20 hours of video footage at the recent C2E2 in Chicago. The investment and creativity cosplayers put into their craft is contagious! We love to shoot more than just the standard "hero pose", often working with groups of cosplayers to create little vignettes based on their characters. Her is Charlie working with a couple to have a little fun with their characters. I love her eyes as she looks directly into my camera at the end of the video. Despite being blown off in our directed vignette, these two heroes walked away together to enjoy the rest of the con.
