Ghada Karmi’s story:
Born in Jerusalem in 1939, she and her family were forced to leave Palestine during the Nakba of 1948, joining the hundreds of thousands of Palestinians who were uprooted from their homeland. Her memoirs offer a deeply personal account of exile, identity, and what it means to carry a place within you long after you have been separated from it.

Through her writing, Karmi preserves Palestinian narratives that have too often been marginalized, documenting both the lived realities of dispossession and the resilience of a people determined to maintain their history, culture, and connection to their land. Her work serves as a reminder of the ongoing loss but also pursuit of justice and self-determination.

Normalizing relations with a state that has brought war, displacement, and loss to Lebanon is not a path toward justice. Real peace begins with ending the violence, securing a permanent withdrawal from occupied lands, and pursuing accountability through international courts for violations of international law.

This excerpt is from Wild Flowers: Women of South Lebanon (1987), directed by Jean Chamoun and Mai Masri. The documentary shines a light on the often-overlooked role of women in resisting the invasion of southern Lebanon, capturing the strength, resilience, and sacrifices of Lebanese and Palestinian women whose stories continue to inspire generations.

Palestinian scholar, activist, and political leader Hanan Ashrawi reflected on the realities of life under occupation during a 1991 interview recorded in Washington, D.C., following the Madrid peace talks. She spoke about the unequal legal systems imposed on Palestinians and Israeli settlers, as well as the color-coded ID system that restricted Palestinian freedom of movement. At the time, Israeli authorities were reportedly considering her arrest upon her return.

More than three decades later, her words continue to resonate in conversations about surveillance, control, and the limits placed on political expression.

A key can open a door, but it can also carry a history. For Palestinians displaced in 1948, these keys remain symbols of home, remembrance, and the enduring connection to the places they were forced to leave behind.
