Dependability vs. Inconsistency

"Here's a lesson about dependability I learned on the high-school track team. Show up for practice every day, and listen to the coach.
Probably the only reason I earned a big "EF" letter at Edsel Ford Highschool, was I had some really fast team members and I rarely dropped the baton. I was one of the slower team members for the 440 and 880 (half-mile). However, coach Jack Bridges made us practice passing the baton over and over. Even in the winter-time indoor practices, we had to practice passing the baton, along with the sprints." (A quote from Doug Vos, founder of IX Publishing.)

One definition of dependability is “fulfilling what I consented to do even if it means unexpected sacrifice.” Dependable people do what they say they will do, even when it is difficult. Dependability comes from two Latin words: "de" meaning “down” or “from” and "pendere", “to hang.”

Imagine a mountain climber going up a steep rockface. If his foot slips, he would literally be hanging in the air! He is dependent upon a sturdy rope and the strong anchor secured to the mountain. In the same way, can others “hang” their trust on what you say you will do? Can they secure their plans on your word, confident that you will fulfill your commitments?

The opposite of dependability is inconsistency. What if you were running along and your foot suddenly gave way? You were expecting your feet to perform their normal functions. You were depending on them! However, their instability let you down. The same is true when someone is inconsistent — he lets others down.

People are disappointed, projects aren’t completed, and trust is broken. Do you honor your commitments consistently or only occasionally? If you are following through only for your own gain, you will likely compromise when you are no longer benefited.

However, when you have God’s love for others and seek their benefit first, you will not want to disappoint them.

Being dependable is sometimes very hard, but can also be very rewarding -- in the long run.

Here at IX Publishing, we consistently run software patches for performance improvements and security upgrades twice a week, every week. Dependability you can trust.

Creativity vs. Underachievement

One definition of creativity is “approaching a need, a task, or an idea from a new perspective.” Perspective is a point of view or way of looking at an object, an idea, or a situation.

Each person has a unique way of viewing circumstances. When you focus only on your own perspective, your understanding will be limited. Many problems can be resolved by looking at them differently.

Understanding and inspiration often come as you ask God for wisdom. Or consult with trusted advisors for new ideas -- to get unstuck. Creativity does not always mean having a new idea, but it may mean applying what you already know in a different way. The creative person thinks of ways to improve results and produce excellent work. He is excited when his ideas benefit others.

An underachieving person does less than he could or should. Remaining in his comfort zone, he misses opportunities to grow. Apathy may cause him to rush through an assignment because he doesn’t care about the quality. He may not realize how his lack of effort impacts others and saps their energy. He exerts little effort to find a way around obstacles. His poor work may result from laziness, feelings of inadequacy, or a fear of failure.

Underachievement may also be due to insufficient knowledge, limited perspective, or a lack of inspiration. However, a person can develop his creativity and be more productive as he seeks knowledge and wisdom.

Availability is a virtue, referring to the willingness and readiness to be present, accessible, and engaged with others or for a purpose when needed. It reflects an open-hearted disposition, where a person prioritizes being there — emotionally, physically, or mentally — for those who rely on them or for responsibilities they’ve committed to. Someone with availability doesn’t just show up; they do so with a spirit of generosity and attentiveness, often setting aside their own convenience or agenda to support, listen, or contribute.

Availability is a blend of reliability and selflessness. For example, a friend who always makes time to hear you out, even when their schedule is packed, embodies availability. It’s not about having endless free time — it’s about choosing to be approachable and responsive, signaling that others matter. It’s a quiet strength, showing up consistently without fanfare.

The opposite of availability is self-centeredness. A self-centered person considers his own interests first and is hardly mindful of the needs of others. If one is focused on himself, he may expect others to always accommodate him. When he actually does help someone, he probably will expect that person to repay him for his good deed. Until he turns his focus away from himself, he will not experience the joy of serving others.

Alertness: "Being aware of that which is taking place around me so that I can have the right response to it."

Are you alert?

Alertness involves intentionally observing what is happening around you. For example, an alert person will notice the sadness or excitement of others, will sense the right time to speak, and will recognize potential dangers such as an approaching storm.

When a potential problem has been perceived, alertness becomes effective when we follow up with an appropriate response such as reporting a potential danger.

The opposite of alertness is unawareness. A person lacking awareness does not pay attention to his surroundings and to the people around him. His unawareness could be due to being absorbed in an activity or preoccupied with his own needs and desires. Distractions and daydreaming divert his focus and rob him of opportunities. In some situations, a person may notice concerns or signs of potential danger, yet choose to dismiss the warnings with the thought, “It’s OK.” His unresponsiveness may be a result of irresponsibility, selfishness, or laziness. Beware of the consequences of unawareness! The unwary and unresponsive person may suffer loss or unknowingly put himself or others in harm’s way.
