Tone isn’t style—it’s story, touch, and everything you carry in your hands.
“Everything I’ve ever done—even the stuff that doesn’t sound remotely close to it… there’s something melodically, touch-wise... I can trace so much of what and who I am to Jeff Beck.” —Dann Huff

In our SEP25 artist-to-artist interview—giant among guitarists, Huff reflects on tone as lineage—not just influence. From phrasing to feel, Beck’s musical DNA echoes through Huff’s hands. For players chasing their own voice, it’s a reminder: every great tone begins with the players who inspired you.

Dann Huff’s been using the same Matchless amp since 1990—and it’s still his go-to.
“The Matchless was my mainstay,” Huff says. “You plug in, and it just works. It takes on the personality of your guitar. It allows the guitar to really speak.”

Dann Huff’s Tyler-modded ’64 Strat was his go-to on sessions for nearly 20 years.

“I saw what Steve Lukather was playing and went out to Norman’s Rare Guitars and bought a nice vintage Strat… And I said, ‘Make it like Steve Lukather’s guitar.’ Basically, put a humbucker in the back, whatever, just soup it up and put a midrange boost in.” Jim Tyler delivered: bridge humbucker, stacked singles in the neck and middle, and a custom Demeter mid boost. That ’64 Strat became Huff’s L.A. workhorse for nearly two decades of sessions.

What started as a mod became a signature.

What’s the most tone-changing mod you’ve ever made?

09/17/2025

Tone’s one thing. Feel is another. This guitar delivers both, with nothing left to guesswork.

The Dann Huff Original Classic isn’t built to impress—it’s built to work. Every contour, circuit, and finish detail reflects decades of Tyler refinement and player feedback. From the soft V carve and compound radius to the Demeter midboost and silent switching, it’s engineered for seasoned hands.

As Ulrichs notes:
“The neck finish is smooth and matted in feel, and the fingerboard feels like the guitar has been played for 50 years.”

It’s not a tribute—it’s a tool. And one you’ll want to keep picking up.
Craft you can feel. Tone you can trust.

Mike Brignardello said it—and it stuck.

Dann Huff’s L.A. rack rig—Tri-Chorus, Dimension D, stereo delays, Jim Tyler-modded ’64 Strat—cut through every mix. “The mid boost was always on… even rolled down, it still affected the top end,” Dann says. It’s the clean tone that launched a thousand sessions.

The gear wasn’t fancy. It just worked—on everything.

“Chime, quack, and bite—straight from ’65.”

“The ’65 came to life with the vintage sounds of Southern California… seamlessly shifting from bite to smooth with a vintage sheen.” —Oscar Jordan. This reissue captures the CBS-era transition—small headstock with gold logo, gray-bottom pickups, and a wide C-shaped neck. Chimey, quacky, and articulate, it delivers the tonal character and responsiveness that have defined the Stratocaster for generations. (From the September 2025 issue)

Three pickups on. Middle in parallel. That’s where the “Billie Jean” tone began.

Tyler’s modded Strat design—series/parallel wiring with a non-defeatable Demeter mid boost—originated with the guitar David Williams used to record 'Billie Jean.' “That’s Billie Jean,” says Rich Renken. “You can’t get that with plug-ins.” While Dann Huff’s ’64 Strat shares the same mod DNA, it was David’s hands on that track.

Not theory. This is how the tones on hit records made.
