“My first experience at Luther College that I can remember was a temper tantrum in the pool.

I was in preschool, when the turf room was the old pool, and I feared the water which seemed boundlessly deep. Needless to say, they didn’t let me go back after that. I still cannot swim very well, but I could probably swim to save my life.”

“This spring, Nancy Le (‘24) received Luther College’s 2023-2024 Joy Tlou Memorial Award. This award recognizes one student each year whose character and activeness around campus promote a ‘community of joy’ for the people and world around them.

Le is graduating this spring with a major in Visual Communication. Having come to Luther in the fall of 2020 from Hue City, Vietnam, Le has made an impact on various people across campus – from her supervisors in the Career Center, to her classmates.”

“It’s funny: one of the first things I learned about journalistic writing was the importance of being impartial. To figure out how to write a story with my own journalistic writerly voice, while not allowing my personal opinion to creep into the story. “My family stopped going to our local, small town Catholic church when I was eleven. The last sermon we heard our pastor give at this church struck me right in the heart. Instead of accepting people for who they were, the pastor degraded q***r people and called them mentally ill.”
