How Azure came into being

And here I am—nearly 40 years later, still loving what I do.

In 1986 my massage journey began, and I named my first practice “Massage for your Health”. Cute right? I also married and gave birth to a daughter in 1988 and she was the key impetus for me to re-evaluated my life after the auto accident in 1992. I began to see massage wasn’t just a side hustle—I could make it a business.

So back to the drawing board I went: I needed a new name. A client’s husband (a recruiter) said, “Pick something easy to find in the phone book—something starting with A or Z, or memorable with doubles like MM or OO.” (Yes, the phone book—remember those?)

One day, after a home visit, I thought: what if I found a name with both A and Z? Memorable, right? At home, I grabbed a dictionary—oops, it was a Spanish/English one! (I crack myself up.) I stumbled across Azurele meaning “clear blue of the sky.” Perfect. When translated into English it's Azure—and realized I’d been on the wrong side of the dictionary the whole time. Silly me. But now I had it: Azure Relaxation Centre Ltd., reserved with the State of Illinois, October 6, 1993.

By June 1995, I left Corporate America to run Azure full-time. In 1996, I remarried and started a new family while building Azure Relaxation Centre. Then in 2006, after a divorce, I realized Azure wasn’t a physical place but a philosophy being developed from experience and practice . On June 3, 2010, Azure was reborn as Azure Touch Body-Mind Connection Centre, LLC.

Keep following for more of this magical growth process!

How about you, are you writing your life story? I encourage you to share.

🔥 From Corporate Cubicle to Healing Hands – How I Built a 40-Year Career in a 5-Year Industry 🔥

I was heartbroken in 1986 when I realized I couldn’t go TCOM just to study manual therapy, but a professor pointed me to The Chicago School of Massage Therapy—and it felt like destiny.

Massage came naturally. It was fun. It felt like home.
For 10 years, I lived a double life:
Corporate America by day and a Massage Therapist during evenings & weekends.

Then in 1992, life hit me—literally. I was rear-ended in an accident that nearly left me paralyzed. That wake-up call made me question everything. Corporate life couldn’t give me the time freedom I wanted to raise my then 4-year-old daughter.
But massage? Massage was joy. I saw the possibility of a successful business and the family freedom I wanted.

A little hiccup:
The stats said, massage careers only lasted 5–8 years. I was in year 10… and I wanted more.

So I dove deep into more learning.
Reiki - Healing Touch - BodyTalk…
And in 1996, I found my soul’s rhythm in Asian Bodywork: Thai Yoga, Shiatsu, Tuina, and the Five Element Theory. In my search at the library of Chicago School of Massage Therapy, I found a book by Ohashi, a Japanese Master in Shiatsu (floor massage) and to my delight, a Ohashiatsu training center was located in Evanston, IL! I embraced this path like a moth to flame. Nature became my teacher. Massage became my medicine.

In May, 1999 I did a 3 week intensive training at the Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine, in Beijing, China. Together, these methodologies taught me body sustainability and the potential to have longevity in the massage field.
In the early 2000’s when the proprietor of the Ohashiatsu School was relocating to California, I considered purchasing the school. However, that did not become my life’s direction, little did I know then, I was in the early stage of developing my own philosophy, C.A.L.M..

Hello, I’m Sharon Armstrong—The Body Wizard and Vitality Coach, dialing in on the ‘social media phone’…

In June 1986, I graduated from the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) with my Bachelor’s in Computer Science. Whaaaat? Computer Science? How does this connect with massage?

I know, right! Well, here’s the story.

Originally, I wanted to be a doctor. Growing up in Jamaica, I dreamed of becoming an orthopedic surgeon because I loved everything about biology and the human body. At age 14, I migrated to the U.S. (July 1975) to live with my mother in New York. I graduated from high school in 1977.

At 19, with one more year left in my pre-med studies at a college in New York, I had to pivot. Finances got tight, and my mother, who had relocated to Chicago, wanted me to join her—so I did. I enrolled at IIT and switched my major to Computer Science, the fastest-growing field at the time. I hoped this strategy would provide me with financial stability to eventually return to my medical studies.

So there I was in the summer of 1986, holding my IIT degree and proudly sporting those letters behind my name, when I heard from a few IIT pre-med friends about a summer program at the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine (TCOM) in Austin. Intrigued, I asked the professor if I could join, and he said yes.

At TCOM, my world opened up to Manual Manipulation and Articulation —known as Massage and Chiropractic respectively, outside of Osteopathy.

I took you on a mini-adventure there, didn’t I?
More on my journey into Eastern therapies coming up next. Follow for more!

Hi I’m Sharon Armstrong, most of you know me as “The Body Wizard” and for those who don’t. WELCOME! I’ve been in the practice of massage therapy for over 39 years.

And now as I start my journey in social media, let me reintroduce myself…

I first got into massage therapy in 1986 because it was fun!
Then in 1992 I was rear-ended in an auto accident that almost left me paralyzed and I decided that corporate life wouldn’t give me the time I wanted to spend with my then 4-year old daughter… but clearly, massage therapy could be both fun and my main career.

It took me 2 years after my accident to leave Corporate America and move into massage therapy…obviously best decision, as next June 2026, I will be welcoming my 40th year anniversary.

But y’all, seriously I’m getting old(er) and before I retire on some beach in Jamaica with a mocktail and no cell service; I would like to pass on my knowledge and experience. To this end, I have started my Vitality Coaching services.

Live life fully! And follow me for more information as they develop.

Coincidence? I think not!
Life's a celebration – and sometimes, it takes a while for your brain to catch up. 😄

This year marks 50 years since I arrived in the United States. On July 10th, 1975, I landed at Kennedy International Airport in New York City, from the beautiful island of Jamaica. 🌴 I vividly remember the drive to my mom's apartment – the whole city seemed bathed in an orange glow. It wasn’t until later I realized the drizzle and hazy weather were reflecting the streetlights in the water droplets. 🌧️✨

To celebrate my new home, my mom's friends took me to Manhattan that weekend to see the British blockbuster Tommy. The theme song, "See me, feel me, touch me, heal me," instantly became one of my all-time favorites. 🎶

Fast forward 50 years to July 10th, 2025 – I’m in Las Vegas for a financial conference. Afterward, my friends and I head to the Hard Rock Café for dinner. And guess what words are above the elevator?

You guessed it: “See me, feel me, touch me, heal me.” 🎸✨

Coincidence or a full-circle celebration? You tell me! 🙌
